basil yellowing what is cause

Murphy, NC

Hi, I am new to growing things in containers and growing the right way. I started various herbs from seed in the greenhouse trays. Everything looked good and I started to transplant. Some seedlings were transplanted to potting soil without a fertilizer mixed and some seeds to soil with fertilizer already in it. 99% of the basil seedlings which are about 4 inches high are yellowing. this is happening with both soils. What can I do?, what have I done wrong...

thank you,
Susan

Do you have them under lights or in a sunny spot? Basil responds well to growing under lights with the tubes just an inch or two away from the leaves.

I wonder if you could be overwatering them? New transplants need barely moist soil, not soggy, or their little roots get waterlogged, and I think this could make the leaves turn yellow.

If you're seeing yellow speckles or spots, be sure to check for bugs... mites, aphids, etc could be the cause.

That's all I can think of, offhand. You might just start a few more seeds "just in case."

Good luck!

I don't have very good luck germinating basil inside the greeenhouse and getting it to grow well. Mine don't seem to like the potting soil either, seem to do much better directly sowed outside.

When mine yellow outside it's because of too much rain depleting the soil of nutrients, and all things turned yellow, given a little fertilizer they turned back green again. But yours is a diff case.

If you have nice weather, perhaps you can harden them off outside some and put them out side completely, they should do alot better with real sun. They do need lots of it. and don't like the cold damp weather at all.

I plant my basil directly into the garden each spring, with all the veggies.

I do most of my herbs in pots outside and basil often turns lighter/begins to yellow for me when it needs fertilizer. A shot of fish emulsion usually does it for mine, but will take a week or two to turn back green. We have high heat to contend with also which is why I think it takes them a little longer to respond.
