Hello,
Has anyone had any experience with Forbid? I am trying to get Avid but this fellow doesn't carry it but he does carry Forbid.
Joanne
Has anyone used this for the dreaded mites?
Do you think you have mites, or are you just trying to be prepared?
Since my suspect AVs started improving after I isolated them and changed a couple of things while debating, ordering, then waiting for the Avid to arrive, I never did use Avid on them (although it did come in handy for mites on some amaryllis bulbs!). But I think I am happy to have it on my shelf, "just in case."
I have what I hope is more than a lifetime supply, so I need to find some little glass bottles.... that way, if (heaven forbid!) anyone's AV collection gets actual mites, I'll be able to offer them a cheaper alternative than buying a $100 bottle fo the stuff.
However, back to your question, sorry but I have no experience with Forbid. I wonder if the folks on the Rose forum might know more... roses seem to get more than their fair share of pests, so the rosarians generally seem to know their chemicals.
Morning,
No I don't but like you say, I want to be prepared just in case. Yes I have heard it is expensive but the alternative is more expensive...losing your collection.
Well this Forbid is supposed to be a miticide but I have never heard of it.
Thanks for replying.
Joanne
OK, here is what was said at the Baltimore AV meeting about mites. They are the devil to get rid of. Usually most problems are environmental. Only way to tell if you really have mites is to send the plant to a lab. Almost everyone agreed including Paul Sorano, owner of Lyndon Lyons; if during isolation change of environment including, soil change for ph, fertilizer change (too much or too little), temperature and humidity change(to hot or to cold) the suspect plant does not begin to revive, THROW IT AWAY.
That was really hard for me to hear because I have put a lot of time and energy into them. Almost like saying throw your dog or cat away. You just don't want to do that. You want to try everything. But when a plant does not respond, it is better to throw one or two away than end up with loosing everything.
Like Jill, most of mine responded to repotting with new soil and a change of temperature. Some however did not and they are in the compost pile. I decided I want to grow plants that enjoy the environment I have to give them. All plants do not grow for all people. I guess it is like and mix and match game. What plants go with which person.
Nanna I think you are right, Allison has said sort of the same thing, plants have to adjust to or be able to adjust to the environment that you have. I know folks who grow things outdoors here that I cannot and of course the same is true in reverse. Still it would be very hard to give up on a plant. I know that sometimes I have replaced a plant w/ another of the same, thinking it was the plant, but more often than not it's me or the environment.
You bring up another very good point, April. When trying to save a plant, if you set leaves from an infected plant the infection (especially mites) is in the leaves. It seems to be an almost loose, loose situation.
Darn!
Yes on one of these posts I read that; maybe it would be easier to isolate and treat one leaf and resulting plantlet? I don't know.
The other thing to consider is that more often than not you could get a new, hopefully uninfected leaf from someone on the forum to replace one or two plants.
Sometimes I just hate to admit that a plant or bug got the better of me. LOL.
I hear you. Right now I am having trouble with arithitis and this morning I feel everything is getting the better of me. The only thing that works are my hands and fingers. OH! I think my mind is hanging in there as well.
Oh Nanna I am sorry to hear that, arthritis is truely a curse. My fear is that my hands and fingers will become crippled...it runs in the family so bad, I have some in different joints but my grandmother's hands were nearly useless, not to mention terribly unattractive! I know that sounds terrible, but as Carly Simon said, "I am so vain...." LOL
Good idea to put a leaf or two down of each plant owned. But leaves can carry mite eggs and other pest so wash and isolate them. Chances are if the baby is not growing right throw it away don't affect all your plants and others you share with.
The healthest looking plants full bloom perfect are the ones most likely to hide iytes, and mealies and thrips and more.
Monsters we teach our children to stay away from are normal high eduacted people some the people we know best.
Same with plants they may be ones we know and love the bast blooming giving us joy. Beware it can have Pest.
If it does not look good hrow it away... Don't share it with your friends :((
Nanna hope you feel better :))
Thanks, Allison. I just worked to long in the garden, yesterday.
Hello ladies,
Thanks for all the response but I still don't know anything about this Forbid.....I do not have mites, I want to have something on hand so that I am prepared and don't have to wait to get something in if I ever do find them or they find me....God forbid! No pun intended here either...LOL!
Joanne
I got some plants in from a vendor and they had thrips.
I isolated them...and used a neem oil, safe soap and a general over the counter plant bug killer for houseplants.
All seem to be responding well..though still keeping a CLOSE eye on them
Ok I know that all of you, some of you, may jump all over me and up and down, but the bottom line is that whatever infests your AVs you want to get rid of and you do not want to have trash your entire collection. I don't have mites but if I did I'd go down to HD and probably start w/ something by Safer then move up the line and I have to say that I wouldn't hesitate to take them all outside and spray them w/ Malathion! I know it's not "earth" friendly- sometimes the means justifies the end!
Oh I have had my husband spray for even gnats with Malathion . I am crazy . I will drench a plant with it or even bleach what ever it takes lol I'd rather kill it than let a bug kill it lol. dish soap, alcohol, musrphy's oil soap. I bought this cool orange peel stuff when I ordered my grow light for my Nematanthus Lorry picked up for me ! When I got this plant I sprayed it down in the shower is got a soap bath, then it got sprayed it up and down all around with neem oil that I have been doing with all my plants new and old. And I have this new soil-less mix with bug stuff. I have gone threw two bags maybe three of it already love it! But I saw something crawling on this plant like a gnat maybe one flew ? orange spray was closet it got a spray down seems to be liking it ! I sprayed all or should i say drench the outside ot pot too trays. On the gessie stand next to it I sprayed down the stand inbetween of trays, boxes in-between. Plus have yellow sticky paper hanging.
I tell ya if I see a bug it's dead. lol I spray all the windows drench lol and inside around door outside . I have hubby do windows indise, outside I don't want anything to come in lol
My orange spray stuff I bought to control fleas as their bad this year and want to use anything I can to keep them away.Something that was safe.

I bought my neem oil and other stuff from here also.
Thrips can also be "starved out" by removing blossoms, I believe... not what we want to do when our plants are blooming, but better than tossing them!
As long as you can isolate plants that may be infested, I think treatment makes sense rather than tossing out plants that may be hard to replace... but you sure don't want to risk the health of the whole lot of them!
Sorry, Orkidlady, it doesn't look like any of us know about Forbid either!
I did a search on Forbid to read up on it but could not find it ?
Hi Allison,
Me neither...thank you for trying though. I have also been trying to find something on a systemic that I have called Moresi and nothing either.
Maybe forbid is forbidden...LOL!
Moresi I have had for years so maybe that one is banned who knows....
Joanne
Is that last product, Moresi perhaps Canadian only- I know that we have many of the same products but some that might be made in Canada might not be exported here? I don't know. Sorry I can't be of much help.
Hi Aprilwillis,
I am not sure if it is or not....not likely I am thinking but who knows.
Thanks for the reply.
Joanne
Has anyone ever tried Bayer Shrub and Tree? Last year I got several different pests in some plants that someone sent me. I did not isolate it and it spread throughtout all my plants. Someone on the C&S suggested the Bayer Shrub and Tree. It is a type of thing you use to water them with. You do not have to spray them. And once you use it, it last for one whole year. So my C&S have not had any pest since.
I just bought a few outdoor flowers and I'm going to mix up a batch for them too. That way they will stay pest free also. I know that Allison just bought some of their potting soil. If it works as good as their other products, her plants should stay pest free. And it is probably a good idea when I mix some up to water my violets as well. I get so tired of those pesky fungus gnats. I have the little yellow sticky traps but once in a while one will find its way to my violets. Anyway, Bayer does make some good products. Hopefully you can find something that will help.

Yes I have used that product for many years, it's really good for scale, but I haven't used it on my indoor plants, I am sure you could but probably at a lower dose. I like most of the bayer products- especially the fire ant killer!!!! I use the Bayer Rose & flower product, more dilute for my indoor plants, including AVs- somebody, Nanna or Critter I think, recommended it and it works really well.
April
I am really liking my new soil mix three bags used so far !
