hummingbird behavior

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

A friend of mine has several feeders together and they are visited daily
I have 5-6 feeders scattered and they are visited on a very off - on basis.

what could cause this? type of feeder, type of nectar

I bought a powder mix at walmart and prepared per directions. I don't know what my friend uses.
I lean towards the glass feeders, my friend buys the cheapest plastic ones at WM and she gets up to 20 birds at a time!

thanks for your help.

Vossner, I would suggest that you do away with that mixture you bought at Wal-Mart. The mixture used by most hummingbird lovers is 1 cup of water to 1/4 cup sugar. Warm the water and mix in the sugar.

Check out this site. You will find lots of information about hummingbirds, feeders, and the plants that hummingbirds like.

I have also read to draw hummingbirds in first, use three cups of water to one cup of sugar. Once the hummers are around, go back to the four/one ratio.

Yes, voss, so frustrating that the HBs like those cheapo red plastic feeders and shun the pretty glass ones! Wouldn't you just know it would be like that!?

Or maybe since your feeders are separated it isn't so easy to ID the HBs visiting...

Early in the season I put out my red plastic feeders with red ribbons (I'm shameless) where I'm sure the HBs will see them with sweeter than usual nectar, and then after the HBs get settled in I switch to the pretty feeders. I don't know if it matters, but ....

Really, I think they are there, you just aren't catching them at the feeders. Good luck.
