Trimming Brugs?

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi all! Thanks to my sister, I have my first very own Brug! I'm thrilled to aquire such a beauty but have a general care question: does one trim a Brug in order to get it to look like a 'tree'? Or do you just let 'er grow and do 'er own thing? Here's what I've got - it's labeled "Charles Grinaldi".
Also, any other suggestions on care would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Betsy

Hi Betsy,

You can get a tree shape by having a cutting that comes from below the first Y of a brug or you an get one from basal shoots that come up from the soil around the trunk. You have to cut them off after they get some size to them and root them. These will both make nice trees. You can also get nice trees from seed grown brugs. They generally get fairly tall before they make a Y, but you just don't know what the flower will look like. Personally, I think that is half the fun of growing from seed. If I take cuttings, I generally cut them about six inches long, making sure there is more than one leaf node on the cutting. Your plant looks nice and healthy. Good luck with it. I'm sure she will reward you with lots of pretty blooms this summer.
