planting depth

Coeur D Alene, ID(Zone 5a)

I just ordered some gladiolas and lillies - the information that came with them says to pant the glads 6" deep and the lillies 8" deep. Is that true?! That sounds really deep to me - I always thought that you plant twice the depth of the bulb. Won't they rot if I plant them that deep??

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Glads usually say 4" deep, but then you have to stake them. 6" or more will give them a good base and help them not to flop over. Glads are a corm, not a bulb. If your glads get really tall, you can also try mounding soil around the base of the plant.

Lilies should be planted 3 times the height of the bulb and sometimes deeper for more winter protection. I plant all my orientals about 8" deep. No they will not rot.
