string algae

Katy, TX

I just put in a new pond about 6 weeks ago and have now been overrun with string algae. I remember seeing recommendations a year or so ago regarding the use of hydrogen peroxide to control string algae, but don't know how much to use. My pond is around 1,200 gallons and uses a skimmer and biofalls system. I live in Texas and the heat has come early this year. Any information on how much to use or other suggested solutions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

That can be a problem especially with new ponds. It takes a little time to get the right balance. Need oxeginator plants. need to have plants to cover about 1/4 of the surface. Shuld use something like microb lift and a packet or two of the benificial bacteria for starting up a pond. but for now use a toilet bole type brush to wind up as much of the string algae that you can. then sust pour some of the HP. around the edge of the pond. You need to have a pump that will change the amount of water in your pond( whoops forgot the number ) I think once every two hours, through your filters.
A good forum to look at is one started March 1 06 by cottosnag. (Can't get rid of algae / Help)
It still doesn't give an exact amount of HP.to use but very usefull info. If I remember right that forum is about 3 or 4 forums back in the water gardens. Good reading.
Just keep in mind that new water will green up with both kinds of algae rather quickly.
Also over feeding fish will also add to the nutrients that algae love..
However some string algae is a sign of a healthy pond. Nobody wants a lot.
Hoping this will shed some light on the problem.

Hey Russ - what are you doing up at this time of day? Well, I guess I'm there too so who's talking - just going tomorrow to pick up some HP for the string algae in my creeks - it's much easier to control in the pond, but the streams are tough cause they are just so shallow - talk to you soon - Becki

Hi Becki;
Gee when things go bump in the night you never know, : )
Funny thing, I was in bed, just could not sleep, so started up the ol computer. That seems to get my mind off other things. Pretty soon I'm tired enough to zonk right out.
Say: I ordered a new pump for another pond in town. Got extra literiture with it . There is some good info on the use of pond salt and a few other products ( yours if you want it. )

Hey - you bet - could you send it on? I'll d-mail you - I added some pond salt today, but could sure use more info - just read on another thread about sick koi? How do you know if they are sick? All the fish were moving pretty slowly a few days ago, but they always do that when it gets cold - I even stopped feeding them for a couple of days - today they are just zipping around in the pond, and are eating well. I don't see any icky stuff on any of them - I tested the water, and all the levels are fine. Anything else I should be checking for? I'll give you my address via d-mail - Becki
