erecting rough cedar fence posts

Kerhonkson, NY(Zone 5a)

Anyone know the best way to secure cedar posts into the ground for a fence? The posts are 8 feet ... we are told putting them in cement would make them rot faster ... how do we put them up so they last the longest without rotting? Thanks for any advice ...

Crock,

I've always just put them in the ground and filled back with dirt. You could fill around the post with sand, then run/pour water to pack the sand. You might have to add more sand and water, but fill and pack to the top. Hope this helps.

Another way is to pack very fine (pea sized) gravel around them. If gravel is small enough, it will pack firm enough to hold them. It also allows moisture to drain away so helps to prevent rotting. Coating the bottoms of posts with a good moisture sealant, like is used for wood decks might help to delay decay also.
