Michigan nurseries

Kalamazoo, MI

Hello,

I live in Warren, a suburb of Detroit. I've been gardening for about 10 years in the small yard of the house I grew up in. When I moved back here, there was grass, one clematis, a couple of roses, a Magnolia tree in the back yard, and a birch in the front. That's it. It's been slowly transformed to the point where I don't call it "the yard" anymore -- it's "the garden". My husband doesn't like cutting grass, so whenever I get it into my head to start a new bed, he's IN.

Anyway, we make several trips a year to Curtis (in the U.P.) and would like nursery recommendations from other Michiganders. We travel up I-75, so any good places to stop along the way? We're going up tomorrow and might stop at Stone Cottage Gardens in Gladwin. Found that in another thread. Maybe a trip to Plescher's (near Curtis) while we're up there.

Thanks!

In season, there is a temp place on M32 west of Gaylord exit 282 where I've purchased some really good stuff, across the road -kind of- from the old Wal-mart.

Don't remember the names of these two places, both near Indian River. Take the Indian River exit 310 west turn left at the light towards Petoskey and it is directly on your right. The other is the Indian River/Topinabee exit towards Cheyboygan. They have really nice trees. plus other stuff.

Two in cheboygan on old27 (or is it old 23?? LOL) towards town just past the M33 junction-- Boucards nice stuff crabby lady and the Plantman a bit further towards town.

Oh my gosh Curtis Mich- vacationed there when I was younger....memories!!

sarv,

Our family started vacationing there around 1967 or so. My grandparents liked it so much they moved there after retiring. After my aunt and uncle retired, THEY moved up there. I even think of doing it someday. Only my 85-year-old uncle remains, so we visit him often.

sarv,

Yes, even a little place like Curtis changes. A couple of businesses in town have changed hands. The IGA, which had been built up nicely for years, is closed. There are still a couple of small stores that carry a few groceries, but most people drive to Newberry or larger towns like Manistique or Escanaba.

Have you tried Bordine's in Clarkston?? Was there today. What a great place....bought at least $100.00 worth of plants there....

Thanks, Deann.

We're back from up north. We picked up a New England Aster for my uncle at Plescher's near Curtis. It's a good place and much better than one might expect to find way up in the U.P. They had some willow trellises and tee pees but no willow stick bundles. I've been trying to find some to make a fence for in front of some perennial geraniums and maybe as a screen for my compost bins. No luck.

We sometimes go to Bordines in Clarkston on the way up, to take a plant as a gift. That's a really convenient stop--right off of I-75. The Rochester Bordines (the original) is one of the nurseries I go to down here. The other is Ray Wiegand's on Romeo Plank Road north of 22 Mile Road (north and east of Lakeside mall). Locally, I visit Young's on Ryan Road north of 696.

We stopped at Stone Cottage in Gladwin today. There wasn't much I couldn't get locally, but they do have lots of daylilies, so when I put in a bed of daylilies, I just might stop in again.

Thanks for responding!

Kristi...........IF you looking for Daylily.....there is a great place in Prescott, Mi to purchase them. Its off of M-55 called Timber Ghost Gardens.....I know this gal personally. She also has a nice selection of Hosta.....and carries some Zone 4 perennials. Her name is Darlene.

Thanks Deann and Hemlady!

I used to quilt a lot and my trips would include stops to various shops along the route to Curtis. Now it's going to be nurseries :)

We're going to Germfask this weekend. How do I find Pleschers??

Kalamazoo, MI

Guess I was spelling it wrong.

Plesscher's
(906) 586-6753
29034 County Road 98
Mc Millan, MI 49853

I just checked a map. It looks like you'd take H44 east from Germfask.

I just called them. County Road 98 is H44.

You'll probably have better weather than we did, but the sun is finally shining on us down here, so on with gardening. YES!
