What is this??

Chickamauga, GA(Zone 7a)

We have found two of these on the ground under a tree in our back yard...when we find them it seems they havent been out of the cacoon long because it doesnt seem like they can fly. We leave them be and after a while we see them fly away!

I know they are not butterflies but some sort of moth right???

Here is a pic.

Yes, that is a very pretty Luna Moth

You're so lucky to see those! I never have, except in photos. The first adults emerge from their cocoons in spring and the caterpillars feed on various tree foliage.

What kind of tree did you find him under?

oh how lucky you are. They are so beautiful. Still waiting to see one in person myself

I am not sure what kind of tree it is....I have several of the ones in the back that drop those big gum balls and I think that is what the tree it was under is.
That is the second one we have found....I have lived here 2 years and this is the first time I have seen them in our yard. We did see one at the Walmart parking lot the other day though.

Here is another pic...
