Does anyone grow red hot poker? Have you tried it from seed? I want these!
How do they do in zone 8-9? Need full sun in this zone?
Thank you!

i have some i started in pots, waiting for the rain to stop so i can put them in. I've seen many people grow them around here. i think all the different types are hardy in your area. some are hardy to zone 5 and im pretty sure full sun is what they need.

Thank you MrEli!
So they are not too hard to start from seed? Did they take a long time to germinate?

seeds i have no experience with. maybe in another forum they could help?

I tried mine two years in a row and they have never come up. If for some odds reason they come up this year, I would not recognize them and most likely with pull them up thinking they are weeds. :-(

Thanks gumlla and asunee!
The place was out of them! So, I might be trying them from seed. Anything special I should know gumlla?

I've grown 8 species of Kniphofia from seed. Some are easy, others trickier. I think it has to do with the freshness of the seed as I've gotten K. tuckii from two sources...one germinated like grass, the others only one sprouted. I grew them in pro-mix, kept them moist at about 70-80 F. They germinated in about 4-6 weeks. I sowed mine in Feb and they are now about 6-8" tall with 4-7 leaves each. Very sturdy looking plants. Now that they are potted in individual pots, I added extra sand and perlite to increase the drainage.

Hey Adinamiti!!! I love this plant..my mother use to grow it in Alabama but we have never tried it here. I must!

My favorite plant! :) I wish more people grew them as I think they are the perfect perennial.

I haven't grown them from seed myself but I have heard that they will bloom in their first year. Unfortunately they are marginally hardy in Maine but one I planted last year made it through the winter with not a lot of snow cover. I have a few plants in pots too ready to be planted out.

Walmart of all places sells these in those little boxes for about $2.50.

Thanks kniphofia.....I can tell by your name you like these!
I wish Walmart here had them but they don't......I will get some!
