Hummingbird question

St Augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

This sounds really dumb, but my hummingbird feeder is hanging on a pole in the shade of a palm tree. I also have honeysuckle vines climbing up my trellis, but nothing blooming yet.

The question is: Will the hummers be able to find the feeder if it is under the leaves of the palm?

I don't see why not. I had my feeder hanging in my desert willow tree, before there were any leaves or blossums on it, and the hummers found it just fine. Does your feeder have any red on it anywhere?

St Augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

Yes, the top is red. But what I am concerned about is that the hummers won't be able to see it from above because it is shielded by the palm.

Move it a little so the red shows and they will come.

I cannot move it unless we remove the whole pole from the ground. I prefer having it there because the tree shelters the feeders to prevent spoilage but wonder if they will find it anyway.

This message was edited May 14, 2006 9:24 PMIn past years I had a feeder hanging from my small front portico. There are also two large hollies at one side. No way to see it from above, but the hummers found it anyway. Sorry, having trouble with the message posting twice.

Also, you might put some red ribbon or some other red signal out for them to help them find the feeder. (Then you can take it down after they get to know your feeder).

great idea, thanks!!
