I bought this from a reputable seller at the Kanapaha Gardens Garden Show where it was labelled Oregano. It does have a strong herb scent but is it Oregano? If so, what kind? Thanks, Karen
What is this herb?
That looks like Cuban Oregano(Plecanthus).I don't think it's edible.
Thanks for identifying it. It appears that it is edible. Karen

Yes, furry. I tasted it and it seems OK but I am not an expert on Oregano.
I've got variegated cuban oregano. I haven't used it in cooking yet, but the taste & scent makes me think it would be a good addition to a pot of pinto beans &/or black beans.
Well, one of us is going to have to bite the bullet and try it (lol)
I believe I'll pass.... I love to feel the leaves and smell but can't work up an appetite. Sorry!
While looking up another plant, I stumbled across the variegated plant I've got. It's called Indian Borage (plectranthus amboinicus variegata) described as a combination of thyme, oregano and savory. Fresh leaves can be used to compliment beans, meats and other strong-flavored dishes. Any volunteers?
Indian Borage & Cuban Oregano are two names for this plant species, according to PF: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1356/index.html
That's why using the scientific names is sometimes less confusing, LOL.
I'll throw some into my next batch of beans & report back!
nursestherapies, you came to the Kanapaha show and didn't contact us? I was at MollyMc's just 10 miles west, and even went to the show!
Oh Darius, I didn't know. We went to Kanapaha to see Liz (Birdlady_Liz) and her husband Richard, who were selling their beautiful gingers and other hardy tropical plants there. If I had thought of it I would have posted.
We want to come back to see the butterfly exhibit at the Museum in Gainesville. Maybe we could arrange a meet when we do.
Karen
Karen, I'm no longer in Archer although MollyMc is. In fact, I hope to move to Virgtinia in mid June.
Oh. Oh well.
