For those of us in the Northeast it seems we're in another monsoon season. My time is so limited that I only have a few hours per week to chip away at my gardens but I'm determined! I bought two good sized patio umbrellas and base stands and do my work under in the rain. I also use these in the summer when the sun is beating down on me. Anyone else just keep working through the rain?
Don't let the rain stop you!
Don't think I'll have much choice but to work in the rain Monday. I received some live plants last Tuesday and still have dragonflowers, gladiolus bulbs, and a few strawberries that didn't fit in the strawberry pot to deal with. Tomorrow's probably out as we're going to a restaurant a few towns away with Mom for Mother's Day and may spend some time afterwards at a brother's who lives out that way.
Planted three roses this morning. Perfect weather for planting and transplanting. I just hate to think what the neighbors are thinking about me out there playing in the rain.
I carved out some space today in the garage to pot up several of my cobalt blue pots that I am turning into a display for my yard. I have annuals and perennials in them. I found these cute azaleas that were done blooming but have the most colorful red foliage. I still have half baskets to pot up with petunias {they hate this weather} for my fence. but I got to cold and wet so I came in with only 4 things finished. Maybe tomorrow! perhaps I can take a picture of my progress.
I have been planting in the rain, mist, fog....whatever Mother Nature throws at me. However...this is not my choice, approx. 15 daylilies arrived this week, along with several perennials from Dutch Gardens. I would have put it off but I know there are at least 15-20 more coming in the next week or two. Sometimes I hate my-self for getting into these pickles! Well it's not raining right now and there is still some light left so off I go again.
Happy Gardening!
As a scientist who had to do a LOT of fieldwork in any sort of weather...downpours...snowstorms...blazing heat...a little rain in my nice civilized garden doesn't phase me at all. I go take a hot shower afterwards and everything is fine. :)
I figure, what's the worst that can happen, I get wet, I won't melt. :)

Well, with water coming into my basement and in my fireplace, there still was a break in the rain and even some sunshine. I got my 5 rose bushes planted between the raindrops.
I can't get wet because I'm so sweet I will melt. (I'm groaning too.)
Between showers I transplanted some lettuce to the garden, set out some violets I got in today's mail and took my tomato plants outside for about 3 hours to get a drink. (We don't set our tomato or pepper plants out until Memorial Day weekend up here)
Its been raining off and on all day but no downpours. Just a nice gentile rain with a few breaks here and there.

I like planting things out just before or during the rain. It seems the plants adjust to the outside much better when they aren't planted in the blazing sun and the rain really perks them up.
We planted 100 strawberries out the other day that Johnny's had sent when it was raining lightly and they have really started to take off.
Now if it would only stop raining.
We are under a Flood Warning, I'm not doing much gardening today, LOL.
Almost 5 inches, so far. More to come.

What I'm furthest behind on is spraying! I bought Messenger (boosts plant immune sysytem and growth), I use Spray & Grow (micronutrients), I have a spray fertilizer and I use an organic product on my roses.
None have been used because the few times it hasn't been raining, I've been busy!
The rain has held off for most of the day but started back up late in the day as now has stopped. I may have lost some of my lettuce transplants (the early ones are hardy enough to take the rain but the others are getting beaten into the ground) Waiting for things to dry out now.
Everyone make it through all this flooding ok? Pretty bad in some places.
Woah, on the way home I saw this big orange ball of gas in the sky. It nearly blinded me. I had to take cover in the Home Depot garden dept. Hmm, I think it was an alien ship that kidnapped me because I don't recall what happened next but I just looked out the window and there's a new rose tree, tomato plant, some shrubs and a few annuals on the patio wating to be planted. I better go check the credit card statement :P
Very Funny!
I just HATE those credit card stealing aliens!
I've begun draining all the watercatchers in the yard to keep the mosquito population at bay. The grass is about a foot tall and due to get taller now that there is SUN!!! I had to go to North Andover to pick my son up yesterday. The Merrimac river is
scary! I am grateful for my little hill here in Saugus.

Sunday's Society Row plant sale in Wellesley is R or Shine. I am not using the R word until then and I am going to the sale. So look out plant societies, I am so there. I'm a MassHort member, so I get in at 8.

It is raining in Danbury and it was raining in Bridgeport when I left this morning. Put out some seedlings that I left too long in the starter tray. Well - if anything grows - it is better then dirt. I was tramping around in a vacant lot (blocks of houses razed for something new) and found a pile of bricks. Some say Stiles and the others say CONN. I took a trunkfull (spiders, ants and all) and will go back for the rest after work today if the @#$#@ rain will stop. Ran into people with a bin and shovel looking for plants to rescue. Guess I'm not alone afterall!
Cool!
Stiles is still in business (MA) but I think Conn. brick has been gone for a long time.
We're in for a cloudy weekend with possible showers - that means possible sun, I hope.
Bought three flats of mixed annuals (my choices) for planting up my pots and have two more flats from Mischel's Greenhouse (online) along with a flat my DG bought of double petunias for the window boxes in sunshine.
I enjoy doing pots in cloudy weather but I don't dig in wet soil to put in perennials . . . or any plants.
Vegetables coming up from the basement, to harden off, soon! Two tomatoes are in blossom.
I have this comming week off, hope to get my tomato's in mid week and maybe peppers in next weekend. Will have to give the soil a day or two to dry out a little. We had heavy rain most of the day.
Pirl, What is a DG other than Dave's Garden?
He's BEAUTIFUL pirl!!
Thanks.
What a cutie!
Awwww, punkin. Isn't he a bit young for your DH, though? :) :) :)
pam (*ducks to avoid hurled vegetables*)
Have no fear. I can't aim straight!
He is beautiful!!
Thanks, Dave.
So are our huge tomato plants in the basement!
Pirl. You made me laugh.
Your cutie looks like he knows something that nobody else does. He knows when the rain is going to stop!
Well, after that mini-hurricane yesterday, I have to go inspect the damage. !@#$%^& rain.....
I just can't remember a rainier spring! Today's my last day for planting before "Old Cape Cod" for a rest. The weather forecast there is a choice of:
Partly cloudy
Rain
Fog
Drizzle
Cloudy
Light rain
"Other rain"
I actually thought there was a mistake yesterday online at the weather site I go to. It went like this:
Thurs.- Partly cloudy, chance of rain 60%, T-storms
Fri- same
Sat partly cloudy 70% chance of rain
Sun. partly cloudy
Mon partly cloudy chance of showers
Tues rain
Wed. partly cloudy
Today it says it may get sunny on Mon. but then immediately back to cloudy.
from channel 4 (Boston area)
We have had more rain in the last 5 weeks then we normally get in 5 months.
Went out to plant the last remaining plants that were sitting in bowls and they were overflowing with water! We need to build the Ark right now!
Today's forecast: showers, followed by rain, heavy at times/
tomorrow, rain, followed by showers.
Sunday, clouds with rain....
