House Keeping African Violets

Silver Spring, MD

I have spent the whole morning washing, prunning, pinching, ect, ect, my violets. I love to putter with them. How often do you guys give yours baths and clean up around the stands and stuff like that?

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I usually do stuff like that every couple of weeks, would do it more often but my family already think I am obsessed! LOL.
I love to putter too.

Nanna, that is a good idea. I am gooing to wash mine today. Do you use just water?

thank you.

Actually I use a old dish soap bottle with a teaspoon of dish soal added. NON antibacterial. Just plain old dish soap. I wash each leaf then rinse with warm water; gently rubbling each leaf between my thumb and index finger. They sure look shinny when they are done. The dish soap doesn't hurt the bloom. Just make sure you don't get the crown too wet. Use a paper towel to soak up any extra water from the crown.

Thank you Nanna.

I use any dish hubby buys even antibacterial works fine never hurt. I use warm water I gently poru the soapy water one wash and risnse. Yes don''t get the crown wet. And don't put in window/lights until dry. Let dry naturaly no towels or paper twoels can damage leaves.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I dab wet leaves or crowns (I try not to wet them, but sometimes....) gently with tissue or with the edge of a piece of paper towel, and that seems to work without damaging the leaves. If you let them dry naturally, you're right -- keep them out of direct light & away from drafts until they are dry to avoid spotting the leaves.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have always been so afraid to get AV leaves wet. All I heard while growing up was that you have to water them from the bottom or they will die. So this concept is so foreign to me.

Mine really need to be rinsed but I'm so scared I'll kill them. I guess I will have to take the plunge soon.

Choose one and go for it. They look so ..... clean after the washing. The leaves shine.

Make sure you support each leaf as you wash it. and be gentle.

Lilburn, GA

They are looking lovely and shiny now!!!
