crown Imperial

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

My yellow crown imperials all came up with great foliage but none of them bloomed. Does anyone know what happened? should I just get rid of them? Does it mean they will not bloom again next year? Fertilize?

Crown Imperial can be very finicky. I have the regular orange, red and yellow. The orange one is 15 years old. It bloomed the first year, then just leaves for 5 more years before it resumed blooming again. This year it had 6 sprouts but still only 2 flowered. The yellow and red are 3 years old and again bloomed the first year but have not bloomed since. Give them time, they may resume blooming in a few years!

thanks Todd...I am wondering now if they are worth it...just sitting there smelling like a skunk and no flowers.

Thanks for the link....I know I have really screwed things up because before I heard from Todd about them blooming (and then taking a rest period for a couple of years) I cut their foliage back. I thought they were just done...so now I know they will not bloom.

I'm still waiting for bloom too. Maybe next year... gotta think positive! lol
