Elephant ear bulbs rotted ?

Claremore, OK(Zone 6a)

I put out 5 elephant ear bulbs several weeks ago. Then the rains came !!!! They were just beginning to sprout at the top tip, so I left it exposed above soil. Now I've noticed that the tip on a couple of them is all slimey and rotted. Does this mean that the whole bulb is a loss ? Or will they revive? The area I put them in is not usually soggy, but drains well. But we have had a lot of rain in a fairly short time, so everywhere is pretty wet right now.

I'm no expert, but mine do the same thing every year. They get this slimey, rotted look.

I just leave them alone and they have done just fine.

I have had these for probably 6-7 years.

Maybe someone with experience will come along and let both of us know what causes this condition.

Hi, Dee
I have e. ears that look like they are beyond hope. I leave them alone and most will come up. I lift mine because I am in zone 6.
Dee, the asiatic bulbs you sent last year are up and doing well. I cannot wait to see them bloom. I also added a few other new ones.

Hi Teresa
I am so glad to know that its not just my EE that do this. The first time I noticed it, I was too busy to get them out of the bed. Later I noticed they were actually growing. Since then I just leave them alone and they do fine.

I am so glad the bulbs are doing great for you. i'm the same way. Put something new in the garden and usually it is the next year before you get to enjoy them.

I've been out in my yard every morning looking around to see what has bloomed since the afternoon before. Just assessing and seeing what might bloom today.

Can you tell I'm a little excited about it?

I hope your entire garden brings you as much pleasure as mine does for me. I just know it does!

Okie dokie then. I guess I'll just wait and see. That gives me hope that they aren't rotting and lost. Thanks all.

Peggie, make sure they aren't still sitting in water....It also depends on what kind of EE is is....colocasias can take much more water than alocasias. Usually, once the leaves are up, colocasias can stand in water and not be affected. If there is still water sitting around your bulbs and no leaves, dig them up and plant them in a pot to get the leaves growing, then put them back in the ground as plants.
