The heat

Fellsmere, FL(Zone 9b)

It has been so hot here in Florida that I have been watering my brugs twice a day. Even with that my brugs are really drooping. Most of mine get some shade but I have one little CG in full sun and by evening the leaves are very curled up and drooping. Does this cause any problems with brugs to get so hot?

We have been that hot once or twice and the only thing I noticed besides the obvious, was that they dropped buds. Generally at night they would perk back up. I nearly lost my EP one year in the heat and she did lose her buds. The buds that matured only bloomed for one day and then they just melted. Not a pretty sight.

Marilyn,

Ok, I am no expert, but this is what I do.

That has been happening to mine here in the 90+ degree Texas heat. When they wilt from the heat and I know that they do not really need water, I go out there, and run the hose until it is putting out cool water. You must remember to run the water a while, because it initially comes out VERY HOT.

Then I give them all a light sprinkling shower of the cool water (I don't drench them), and the ground around them as well. That really cools things off and perks them up. I have not lost any buds yet, and they are covered with buds.

Hope this helps.

Sheral, I do the same here. I mist my whole court yard and get my surrounding fence and floor wet and it immediately makes it drop a few degrees. I can feel it turn cooler. And I do not even get that hot here. I put my hose on mister. Even if it didn't do anything, I always feel like I am doing something so special for all my plants. LOL

I have also been misting the leaves as I give them water. I usually wait until around 6:30 in the evening to water and by this time they are really sad looking. They do how ever perk up once the sun goes down.

They hate the strong heat Marilyn from what I see. I think they is why they all bloom like crazy in the early fall till frost in a lot of places.

If they are thirsty, I would water them earlier though. Why have them collapse from lack of water and then stressed by the intense heat on top of it.

I water them in the morning just after daylight and then again in the evening. I hope I am not watering them too much.

I use a water gauge to see whether the soil is in need of water.

If the leaves seem a bit wilty, and the gauge tells me the soil is moist, then I put my mister on early evening, and mist the leaves and trunk, and in a few minutes, they're all perked up again. I can actually see those leaves moving, and still get a thrill watching it.

Oh I also put a top dressing of Green Moss by Schultz in all of my potted brugs.......really helps with the moisture retention, and looks pretty, too!
