deadheading species tulips - T. turkestanica etc.

ottawa, Canada(Zone 4a)

Hi Everybody:

My T. turkestanica have finished blooming (around a week ago). Since they are a wild species, I was wondering if I should be deadheading them or letting them finish out as they would in the wild.

I know that the T. tarda will re-seed but I'm not sure about the turkestanica (also T. clusiana, T. pulchella, persian pearl).

I planted tons species tulips last fall in my first serious attempt at flowers. This spring - wow !!

Thanks

Steve

I have a lot of species tulips - I usually deadhead them. Doesnt seem to stop them from spreading!

The choice is yours about deadheading or not. It does put a drain on the plant so allowing them to seed my decrease the blooms for next year. Only tarda and turkestanica have self-seeded for me (simply becuase I missed a few seedpods)...I generally deadhead just to keep the plants as strong as possible. Many tulip species will naturally split their bulbs and increase.

Cool. Thanks for the response.
