Can You trim the roots of Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Hello Everyone,
I have a preformed pond that holds about 150 gallons of water. In it I have two koi (small ones only about 6" long), but I never see them they won't even come up to the top for food. (any suggestions as to why they are so shy and what I may be able to do about it?)
The floating plants give them plenty of places to hide. The roots on the Water Hyacinth and Water lettuce are huge, probably about 2 feet long and very full. I though if I trimed them a bit I could see the fish.
I thought the koi would eat the plant roots, but they don't seem to be keeping them trim.
If anyone has ever trimmed the roots of floating plants or knows if a trimming would hurt them I'd appreciate the help.

yes, I trim both when they get too long. Just grab all but the top handful or so, and break them off. Put them in your compost pile:)

tiG,
Thanks for the help. I thought it would be ok, but wanted some reassurance before I started "cutting".

they'll put back out too. Ours aren't growing a lot this year, but last year, I couldn't keep them short, I would get back from the compost pile and need to do it again.

okay, almost:)

I trim mine too, sometimes they look so messy!! Last year I trimmed them too much and they were top heavy and all tilting over.(they looked a little drunk) I will not make that mistake this year!!!!!! sue
