We had to put our mare down

Taylors, SC

Hello everyone,
I know I wrote the announcement about Fidgit being born on Good Friday and then seemed to drop out of the conversation. Part of that time was made up of being busy with new foal and part of it was dealing with an abcess/tendon issue going on w/ dam. Sadly, I am writing to let you know we had to put Vienna down when Fidgit was just 12 days old. The infection had gone from her hoof to the coffin bone and into the joint. The prognosis was really bad and even with a nerve block to get her to the vet's and another to get her home, she was shaking horribly on her rear and wouldn't even put her front leg down in less than 2 hours after being blocked. It was without a doubt the kindest thing to do for her, but a horrible decision on many fronts, not the least of which was she was leaving behind a 12 day old filly. In 15 years of owning horses, I have never had an abcess and despite 2 vets and 2 farriers seeing Vienna several times in the 12 days since she went lame, somehow this rolled into a worst case scenario for us all.
Luckily Fidgit was already REALLY attached to people so as long as either my older daughter or I was in her stall, she would not cry out. But she refused formula from a bottle, from a bucket, from pellets. She refused it from me, a horse trainer friend of mine and another lady who has, "never had a foal refuse formula from me." She hadn't met Fidgit. She would drink water from a bucket, munch a little grass, but that was it. We put Vienna down Wed at 2:00 in the afternoon, by Fri morn I had called the vet to come out and tube her twice so she would make it until the nurse mare got here Fri night from KY. When the nurse mare arrived, Fidgit immediately went to her and nursed. I have never heard a sweeter sound. The nurse mare is doing a good job watching over Fidgit and keeping her fed, and for that I am very grateful.
I wanted to let you all know since you answered all my silly questions while Vienna was pregnant, and rejoiced with me when Fidgit was born.
If she turns out to be half the mare her mom was, I will consider myself blessed.
Elizabeth
(BTW, looks like my black filly will be a black bay or brown black to answer the coat color question from my "It's a Girl!" post)
