Multi-colored butterfly bush??

Chickamauga, GA(Zone 7a)

I just got in the parks catalog and on page 26 they have a multi colored butterfly bush (Buddleia 'Bicolor) Are these easy to grow from seed or cuttings?? and if so does anyone have any to share?? I have never seen this variety in my local stores.

Hmmm...I bought two from one of those mail order fliers that someone mentioned a couple of months ago. They are supposed to bloom in three colors. White, bluish purple and a reddish pink.

I planted them in pots when I first got them and put them in the ground about a week ago. The south Texas heat wilted them when I first transplanted them into the ground...but I temporarily moved a trellis over and slid boards onto the trellis to shade them - they are doing well now.

Am hoping they will grow faster now that they are in the ground. No sign of blooms yet...

Thanks for the info Cat....are they a new variety of butterfly bush? Do you remember where you bought them from?

If you look at the plant files listing for the Bicolor butterfly bush, there are 5 vendors that have it for sale. Becky

What did you use for searching? I must not know what I am doing because nothing comes up for me

Plantfiles was problematic as far as a search fore Buddleia Bicolor went. There were 14 pages. I did find this info- a link to Wayside Gardens. I also searched the web using "Buddleia Bicolor" and each of the vendors I was able to check in Watchdog was less than stellar.

You might try contacting these people- they might have some or put you in touch with someone who can do a cutting for you. http://www.agctr.lsu.edu/subjects/MasterGardener/lafayette/springsale05.htm

Hope this helps,

Don't mean to be a wet blanket but do check out Direct Gardening in Watchdog.

Just as a point of curiosity- the only way I could figure they got all those 3 in 1 plants was to graft them. Is there another way to get stems with flowers of a completely different color on the same plant? The B. Bicolor I looked at transitioned color on the same pannicle- like an animal with a color patch. If so, I definitely want some.

Thanks,

Maggie

I too thought it looked grafted :( bummer...... Alot of their other plants did also look to be the same way.
I think I will just end up waiting till the bi-color one is more available. I thought the actual bi-color one seemed like Lantana how it starts out one color then gradually changes to the other..

I bought a "3 color butterfly bush" from a mail order company. LOL, received a pot with 3 tiny plants in it. I assume that each one is a different color plant and that they are to "grow together" to make my 3 color plant. I think I was had!!! Oh, well, live and learn.

At least it will be pretty when they all bloom Crystal.

I agree with margaran, these must be grafts, which is OK except that next year when you prune your plant you must exercise care in not cutting off the graft. Likely, the graft will have a hideous callous, easy to recognize and hence easy to avoid pruning. If you can spot the graft and not prune it, I guess all would be honky dori.

what I did was buy a small nanho blue and a small white and plant them together in the same hole, to make them grow like a bicolor. It works almost OK. I say almost because the white flowers don't bloom at the same time as the purples, so I don't necessarily get the bicolor effect. Since I only did this last fall, perhaps in another season the flowering will sychronize, that would be so lovely.

In another part of the garden I pair-planted a white with one that is a purplish rose. it's just begun to bloom, so I can't comment on the bicolor effect just yet.

I'm glad to find this thread. I too was intrigued with Bicolor. I think I'll wait for your results. They reminded me of Lantana too, which I love!

Neat idea Vossner. I've seen it done with three colors of Lilacs and it's pretty.

Keep us informed on how well Bicolor grows and if you're happy with it!

Margaran,

Yes...that company has terrible ratings...but I didn't check out the garden watchdog until after I'd already ordered. I haven't had a problem with them yet......

All the plants arrived quite quickly and in good condition. They are all growing well in pots and some in the ground.
So far...so good...but I am still keeping close tabs on all the plants I ordered from them :o)

Hi everyone! I have a seperate butterfly bush question. I have a buddleia "Dark Knight" that is about a year old. It appears that something has been eating holes in the leaves. It gets worse every day. Anyone know what kind of critter could be causing this?? Or could it be something else??

Also, what are some ways of solving this problem, without using pesticides of course?
