Suddenly my brugs seems to be putting out it's leaves weirdly. Attaching pic,
Do I have a problem? If so, what do I do????
Robin
Houston, do we have a problem?
This happens occasionally with some of my brugs in spring. I've heard everything from nutrient deficiency to mites/pest problem. Nothing ever definitive.
It looks like calcium deficiency to me. I would try 1 tbls of gypsum( you can get this at any store that sells garden supplies) to a gal of water and water the plant with it.
Do this every week for 3 weeks and you should start to see normal growth. The deformed leaves you have already will not change but the new growth should be ok.
Since cyclamin mite damage looks similar if you don't see normal growth starting in a couple of weeks then I would treat it for the mites.
It's weird how this happens. I'll have some brugs grow like this that are growing in the same area as other brugs in the same type of soil, getting (or not getting, depending on how behind I am) the same fertilizers. Every year though, it happens. They do outgrow it eventually, whether they correct themselves or I accidentally do something right.
Terry, do you think its possible that each individual hybrid could have different requirements that might make one do this while others in similar circumstances are unaffected?
I had one like that last year and it never came around. I can't remember which one it was. But I think it didn't get picked to come back this year. I'm like you I tried everything. I use Cal-Mag PlusŪ it is a bio-catalyst for plants; a highly beneficial plant nutrient supplement to correct the inherit problem of calcium, magnesium and iron mineral deficiencies found in most soil fertilizers and some hydroponic nutrient liquid concentrated formulas.
Cal-Mag PlusŪ Helps Prevent:
Blossom end rot in tomatoes and peppers.
Tip burn in lettuce and cabbage.
Dry and withered flower and fruit set.
Interveinal chlorosis.
Stunted growth rates.
Upward leaf curl.
Cal-Mag PlusŪ is a custom plant supplement for calcium, magnesium and iron defeciences.
I use 1T. per gallon everytime I feed my Brugs. This didn't even help my poor plant. So needless to say it ended up in the compost pile.
I've had some that did that. They're compost now too. Nothing helped them.
I have seen something like it here a few years ago. It was caused by cyclamen mites, but as Snowhermit mention, calcium deficiency have similar symptoms, boron defiency too. In both cyclamen mite attacks and calcium def. the top leaves become brittle and later die back, but in the case of mites, the leaf will often be bronze colored beneath like on the photo.
I also have yellow spotting on the leaves. I will get the calcium. We just had a hail storm and the leaves look like lace doilies. should I cut the tree back??? If so how much??
Thanks to all for posting!
I had that problem with hail last year, I only removed the damaged leaves, and they all came around, like everyone says Brugs are a very forgiving plant. We are getting into the hail season now, hope we don't get to much.
