Has anyone ever tried Bayer Advanced Garden™
3-in-1 Multi-Purpose Potting Mix

I think I have before but when I see it on sale Hubby can never find it. Sense I can't go to the store I have to depend on what he brings me home . Yesterday he said Lowes was out of Perlite and MG potting Soil. BUT I NEED it BAD NOW :))
So I went on line, ordered it from Lowes, paid for it and have it ready for him to pick up at the store. Of course no shipping charge ~
Bayer Advanced Garden™
3-in-1 Multi-Purpose Potting Mix

The only potting mix with insect protection
Moisture control soil
Kills adelgids, aphids, fungus gnats, Japanese beetles, lacebugs, mealybugs, thrips and whiteflies
Protects up to 4 months

Kills damaging insects for up to 4 months
Moisture control ensures plants get the right amount of water
I'm going to try it. I always re-pot new plants, and babies get new pots and soil, and I'm always re-potting plants... And if it can help with the few gnats I have I will keep using it :))

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm anxious to hear how it works for you. I've heard such mixed opinions on potting soils with additives.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well I got three bags :)) I like the idea of bug stuff in it ! it's only good for 4 months but I like to re-pot new plants and then leaves this will help for newbies in isolation maybe if they have anything it will kill them !
I been washing and spraying foliage both sides and soil with Neem . We take them out on the deck to spray but the neem oil still is bothering me so hope this will be good .
I know a lot of people put stuff in their soil mix to kill bugs.
If it kills gnats I'll be happy !

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

I don't know if it was Bayer's brand or not, but last year my daughter bought a lot of that type of mixed soil with all those extra benefits. She loved it and used it in all her pots.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Sounds like a good product. Last year I had such a bad attack of aphids and fungus gnats and mealies and someone told me to buy the Bayer Tree and Shrub and spray everything with that and it would not only kill all the bugs but would continue to work for one whole year. Well it worked great so I'm sure the soil is as good as that was. I'll let you try it out Allison and tell me what you think. Will you mix it with Perlite or use full strength?

Jesse

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

bayers all in one..can come in granues and liquid as well...it is considered one of the best...they have a dandy all in one for roses as well......i suspect it comes at a premium price...

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well I bought three bags 30 quarts was only like $2.00 more than 32 quart bag of MG potting soil.
When my husband mixed it he used a 10 quart bag of it with an 8 quart bag of Perlite. We both liked the feel of it mixed together it was real soft and fluffy and light.
He had asked me to come look at it and see if I wanted more perlite like we usaly do. But this Bayer Advanced Garden™
3-in-1 Multi-Purpose Potting Mix was really different and the 8 quarts of perlite with it was perfect ! So far I really like it :))
Sunday my husband had gone to Lowes and they had no perlite and no MG potting soil I've been using. So I looked on line at Ace Hardware but their same bag of perlite is $ 2.00 more than Lowes.
So what I did was order it and pay for it on line then my husband could go pick it up. !!! It's so hard for me as I have to depend on others to do everything for me
and shop. Now If I went to Lowes and they did not have Perlite or MG ... I'd tear the store aprat until I fount some lol . But Hubby he does now see it they don't have it. So I got 3 bags of Bayer Advanced Garden™
3-in-1 Multi-Purpose Potting Mix and and 4 bags of Perlite so I'll be Ok for a few weeks :))
He just made me 18 quarts tonight :))

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

allison..sounds like it's going to be just perfect and extra protection...congrats to you both.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks ! I will let you know how everything grows :))

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I know that you DH helps you out a lot with your violets, but does he enjoy the finished product, when the cute little darlings bloom as much?

Jesse

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

we've had threads on imidacloprid before. Same active ingredient in all those bayer advanced products. Same thing as Marathon. Same as in some pet's flea collars. Highly toxic to fish and aquatics, so don't mix in your vivariums.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Thanks Keyring ! Yes I was reading bag carefuly and hubby disposed of bag properly. I am going to use gloves when potting too.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse that's a weird question ?? " but does he enjoy the finished product, when the cute little darlings bloom as much? ""
What kind of question is this ? There could only be one answer to it.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Allison, I sure did not mean to offend you. I guess I did not word it correctly, but what I meant was is he as in love with the african violets as you are? Does he enjoy all the different little things about them as you do? I was just wondering if he just helps you out because he loves you or if he really gets into the AVs as a hobby as much as you do?

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse of course he likes them.
He is an excellent gardner and takes care of all the garden beds outside .
But we live in the real World . He has to WORK, and gets up at 4:30 am each morning to do so, then I require 24 hours care and everything done for me. He does all the shopping, cleaning, laundry, care , walks taking out of Precious, all my care except for an hour a day Hospice comes in to help, repairs up keep on home, cooking, give me showers, dress me...do I need to go on . lol
A person would not take time to mix soil each week, ( week after week after year after years ) put leaves down , water, package plants and more ...take care of all our beautiful garden beds , a never ending list just for love but there has to be some enjoyment or they would just do what was
necessary and not above beyond so much that is not.

But in his World there is no Space or time for Hobbies. He chose to do all this when he took me out of the Nursing Home though I have prgressed much more and gone from using a walker to wheel chair and 99 percent bedbound each day his kind giving choose turns into more works of Love each day. Does not leave time for getting into Av's as a Hobby like I do nor any other hobbie. His life is selfless so I may.I am not offended , just explaining common sense .

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I potted up the leaves I got from Bloomlovers , Tina ! I did a lot of trans-planting. If the plants like this mix as much as I do :)) and grow well I will be thrilled. I like the feel, looks, texture, light , fluffy feel to this soil and I enjoyed poting with it ! I can tell the difference right away. :))

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Allison let me know how you like the Bayer soil- I have used a lot of their products and been very pleased w/ them- they make an especially effective Fire Ant killer and when it comes to fire ants I have to set aside my pacifist ways. I have not seen the soil here, but it is likely that I have not looked or have over looked it. So far I am a big fan of theirs.

Lilburn, GA

April, you have a dmail waiting for you.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

April so far I am really enjoying it :))
I went on line to Lowes and ordered it. They did not have a large bag so I bought 3 10 quart bags. They had MG on line to. See my husband had been at Lowes the day before and they had no Perlite or MG.
Well now I'm glad . As when I went on line I saw they had the Bayer Advanced Garden™
:)) I had asked him to get it one time long time ago when I saw in a sale add but when he went none .
So I saw it on line and order it instead of MG potting mix. Then he added 50 percent Perlite to it and it is perfect for me :))
When you order one line and pay for it you can pick it up at the store no shipping cost.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Allison,

I was not trying to be weird. And Please excuse my ignorance. Since I'm never around anyone that has to taken care of a person at home all the time, I was not aware of all the things that have to be done for them. I was not aware of all that your husband has to do. It is obvious that he works very very hard, and that he loves you very very much. I never knew that you were in a nursing home. I know that you like being at home with your DH and Precious and all of your AVs. I'm so glad that you are able to be at home. I do have to do a lot of extra stuff for my DH, things that most husbands can do for themselves, but at least he is not in bed most of the time. But if he was, I would take care of him there too. Love is an amazing things and helps us do things that we might not otherwise be able to do.

It is truly amazing that you do such a great job with all of your violets, packaging them like you do. You do such a wonderful job with not only that but your love and devotion is clearly evident in each little flower petal, in each little leaf. I've often heard that when a person is handicapped in one way, they are able to achieve great things in other ways. And we can all see that with you and your violets. I'm so glad that you have all of your violets and other indoor flowers and thankful that you share them with all of us.

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Jesse material items mean nothing we are just borrowing them for while on Earth.
I am Blessed to grow so many babies to be able to share and touch others lives !
Oh yes Thanks for the box today with Zillions of leaves :))
I had a wonderful carer , big home , worked hard almost two jobs all my life . Never drank nor smoked until one day I got home and could not carry my purse into my home, or walk to the mailbox.
I progressed fast and had no one to care for me. I ended up in a Nursing home and lost everything I owed and worked hard for that could not fit into a half of a Nursing home small room. We come into this World with nothing and leave with nothing. None of us our owed material pleasures.
In the Nursing Home is when I met my husband . And it has been challenging I'm sure but he has taken care of me sense :))

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow! I am so happy that you two met and that you were able to get out of the nursing home. He sounds like a wonderful man. How long have you two been married?

DH and I have been married 4 and a half years. It has been quite different being married to someone who can't see very well. I was so used to being with someone with perfect vision for such a long time. I love to look at all of the beautiful trees and flowers while riding down the road and was so used to saying, "Look at this or look at that. Isn't it beautiful?" I think that was the hardest thing for me to get used to and I still say it sometime when I'm not thinking about it. It just breaks my heart that my dear sweetie can't see and enjoy the same things that I can. That is why I go to such a great extent to make sure there is something in the house that he can see and enjoy. I am getting ready to try my hand at making a little flower garden outside in the front yard so that he can have something to enjoy out there too. I'm just so lost when it comes to growing anything outside. But I want him to have it so I'll do something. I love him so much and I want him to enjoy some of the beautiful things that nature has to offer.

Anyway, I just want you to know that I'm so happy for you that you are at home again Allison. And tell DH that I said he sounds like a wonderful man and give him a thank you from me for doing what he does for you. Everyone needs a thank you once in a while and I think he deserves a big one.

Oh, by the way, I wanted to say that I'm so thankful for my DH too, even if I have to do a little more for him. I could never have asked for a better man. He is so good to me and for him I am truly thankful. I just could not leave him out of this since I'm talking about wonderful men. He takes good care of me too. We are both blessed Allison, to have such great men in our lives. Don't you think so?

Jesse

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Allison,

Does this mixture have any plant food/fertilizer in it? If so, what do we do about feeding our AVs since we use the Optimara plant food for AVs?

Jesse

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Well they say there is food lol Though I never see it but I can't see the bug killer either . I just save money and wait a few months before adding extra food !

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

Allison

That is so romantic! I thought you two were married beofre you went into the nursing home. What a wonderful man you must have.

Jesse, you sound perfect for your husband too :)

My DH drives me crazy but when it comes down too it, he is a great one also. He took me and my girls, went from living with his parents to having a ready made family, wanted them to call him daddy, and is their father in every sense of the word. Some one at work asked him one day if he loved little Jeff more, since he was his biological father, and DH got angry, because he thought it was a very rude question, and told the person that if anything he loved the girls more, because they had been "his" longer :)) He works 12 hours shifts, 5 and 6 days of the week, 2 hours away from home, so I can stay at home and be a full time mom. On his days off, he is so accustomed to getting up early in the morning, he gets up with the kids and lets me sleep in. He cooks, he cleans, he does laundry, he thanks me for doing his laundry.... after 6 years, he still does it every time. Sound like there are alot of us blessed with grea husbands here :)

We've been busy re-pooting babies that grew out of their 2-2.50 inch pots and babies from Mom with my new soil-less mix. I am really enjoying working with it :)) I have so many plants and babies that need trans-planting. So much enjoyment !
Soon I'll get some picture downloaded I've taken this week !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Nanna this is the soil-less mix I am using I like it and have gone threw 5 bags of it and Hubby has to mix more for me today !

I have just read this thread and am amazed. What wonderful, romantic husbands! Allison and April you are both very insightful. Material things arn't that important when you have the love of a good man.
