Overwintering Brugs

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

I was wondering what is the furthest North that someone have successfully overwintered brugs outside (greenhouses don't count Chele).. although if you put them in an unattached un heated garage or outbuilding, that might count.

LOL Jazz! I actually have not tried to overwinter them in my greenhouse. I had thought people in 7 had them come back from the roots.

I left one out this past winter. I had my daughters friend pile all the leaves on it. I pulled them off abt 2 weeks ago,cut it down till I thought it was good wood. I am still waiting. I thought I saw little leaves trying to push out. We have had some cold nights since I uncovered it. If it makes I will be bragging. dixie

Awesone Dixie! I hope it comes back for you!
We are supposed to be zone 5 but we are a lot warmer than most zone 5's even in winter. We might be in a little micro climate here. I would love to be able to leave the brugs out and I may experiment this year and leave one or two out.

Hey, I checked my pklant and I have little green leaves coming. Now we didnt have a hard of winter as we sometimes do. But the plants I had in my unheated garage is doing nothing, I think I lost all of them. Go figure.

Well.. the nice thing about the plants in pots is that you can always dump them out and check the roots. :) I am vey excited about your little green leaves!! Keep us posted!

Hi Jean, I am ssure someone else will answer you. I am fairly new to Brugs. I Miracle Grow mine, lots and lots. If you read through some old posts you can see what everyone uses. Yes you will be able to get cuttings in the fall. Root easy. I have 5 trees in my daughters garage over winter(her garage is attached to house)One of them is blooming now with no leaves. I will be getting them o;ut this next week, I wanted to be sure before I brought them to my place because they are too heavy for me to lug in and out.

jeaninpgh,

Brugs will eat just about anything you throw at them. I've used lawn and garden fertilizer, Osmocote, Miracle Grow, Peters 20-20-20, CalMag 15-5-15, and many organic things too. They aren't picky and will even bloom without fertilizer. However, if you plant in soilless mix in a pot, I would feed them. After mine had to go without food last summer, they didn't do well. Once fed regularly, they bloomed like crazy again. My best results are with Miracle Grow, Peters, and CalMag. I basically stick with the CalMag now. It's good to hear you are having fun with your brugs. Before long you will have more than you know what to do with. Mine are all in the ground or potted except two big ones still in the house. Tomorrow they go out under a tree for a while. I think I have around 65 or more this year. Not sure.... haven't counted yet.
