Got tads?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

My girls have had the best time catching these. In just a couple of weeks time, we have watched them triple and quadruple in size, grow back legs, then grow front legs.

There are literally thousands of them! They have not lost their tails yet and do a bizarre combination of swimming and hopping and are fun to watch. My kids spend hours playing with them.

We also have a bunch of itty bitty crayfish ranging from the size of your pinkie nail up to six inches long. Lucky for them they don't look as appetizing as crablegs and lobster tails. LOL I'll try to get pics if anyone is interested. I am just amazed with all these tadpoles!

Michelle...dont want to hear about your trying to BBQ those crayfish :)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

BBQ? I was thinking about a good old fashioned southern boil! LOL

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

That might work but you know...we figure anything tastes better if you can roll it in cornmeal and fry it in grease :)

Hi, My grandson loves to play with them too. It may be a silly question but does frogs eat baby goldfish. I have some that are so tiny they are hard to see and I was wondering if frogs ate them.

LOL Charlotte!

busybee, so far as I know, it's "dog eat dog" in nature. If the fish is bigger or the frog is bigger, you are going to lose the other one. We tossed some tadpoles in the pond and the fish had no problem gulping them down. At my other house, the bullfrog stayed in a five gallon pot inside the pond and kept it's tads in there too. I did see the fish swim in and out of the pot when the water was high enough but can't really say whether or not they ate the tadpoles. Once we were up to three bullfrogs that I knew of, no more baby fish matured. It could have been the larger fish or the frogs that ate them.

Here is a pic of some of the varying sizes of crayfish/crawdads.

Michelle,

I am new here but don't you have to soak your crayfish in milk or buttermilk so they will purge themselves before you boil?

I have some frog eggs (I guess that is what they are) in my pond....they look like a polka dotted ribbon.

Oh Vickie, please don't take me seriously. LOL You couldn't pay me enough to eat anything in my yard unless it's leafy or makes fruit!! I could eat sea food all day long but not anything out of a mud puddle. :)

Yeah, that slime trail is probably frog eggs, but possibly fish eggs. They'll look like little balls with dots on them, almost see through. Since you said ribbon, I'm going with frogs. The fish are usually globs.

I'm not sure about the fish but my turtles consider tadpoles a delicacy and will devour all they can get.

The kids threw some tads in the pond and the fish had them before they hit the water. LOL A couple of years ago when the locusts were so bad, we'd toss those in and watch the koi fight for them.

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Vickie, If you were going to purge crawfish you would soak them in salt water and it makes them spit up all the mud inside them.

LOL All we needed was someone from La to check in. LOL

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

The koi in my pond pay absolutely no attention to the tadpoles. The pond is literally teeming with them. (One night we counted 64 mating pairs!) These are toad tadpoles. Is it frog tadpoles that koi eat?

Michelle,

I knew you were joking! But in Louisianna and South Texas Crayfish are a big deal! They sein them out of the bayou and have a feast! My 2 teen aged sons like crayfish but I would not touch them either!

snapple....my fish don't bother my tadpoles either......I'd love for you all to share some with me if you have extras. I'm looking for any type of tree frog, or leopard frog, just not toad or bullfrog....
