I posted this also in Homesteading forum, but feel it is appropriate here as well. PBS has an interesting mini-series starting Monday in which a group of present-day people live on a Texas ranch with no more amenities than those available in 1867. All of my grandparents and their families endured the rigors of the Texas frontier after fleeing the turbulence of the Reconstruction South, and from individual accounts from them we know how harsh life was. The program should be worthwhile in showing how gardening and homesteading activities sustained them. Show times vary; check local listings.

My DH wanted to be on this show. He thinks life back then roughing would have been the best. He's always wanted to be the farmer/rancher. But when he looked into there is no compensation at all and we couldn't afford to lose his income. Looks like it will be an interesting show.
Thanks Yuska, I will be sure to watch!
