Today it starts!

I was out just a bit north of .the city with Fancy for an agility games seminar this afternoon. It happens that there is a very nice little nursery just 'down the road' so of course I stopped in! All thei 4" pots 15% off plus I get a Hort. Society discount. Wont tell you what I bought - most of it of course not on my list! Which was at home! But I did pick up a nice little Japanese Maple - not hardy here but I love them should be able to overwinter it in the porch - and a Carol Mackie Daphne. Had one a few years ago but lost it after about 5 years. And 3 Heucheras! None of them on this years list (of about 15!)Creme de Menthe, Strike It Rich Gold and Creme Brule. Oh and a Tiarella for the white shade garden which is under construction. Oh and I found another Pulsatilla (Crocus) - this one is white!

The first week of May is when I usually make my annual rounds of all the nurserys in town. Used to go to lots of the out of town ones too but mostly I can find what I want here now. The quality and range of perennials available has certainly changed significantly from when I was first planting beds 15 years ago! Pam ()Lilypon) is in town next week so perhaps she will come with me! Maybe I can persuade her to help me shift that huge pile of compost out on my parking pad!

This is the start of what my back porch looks like when I start to buy plants - the table will be covered(it is not normally there) and the bench and also some things will go in the small plastic covered 'greenhouse' out in the back yard. Nice thing is I can open up the windows and get things hardened off without hauling them in and out.

Here is a closer look at the Heucheras.

Ooh the heucheras look good. I for one, do want to know what you bought. My holding area is already getting full, but not from plants I bought this year. I've dug and divided and got seedlings out there. My back hurts just looking at it. Dominion order came Friday and I've already snuck a few things home from nurseries a few weeks ago. Lots of orders to come.

I got Strike it Rich 'Pink Gem last year........don't got it anymore.

OK Brenda here you are:

Carex flagelefera (Sedge)
Acquilegia 'Ruby Port'
Gaillardia Burgandy x 2 ( I buy these every year or two and they dont survive but I keep hoping!)
Eregion 'Pink Jewel ' and Azure Blue'
Allysum, perennial
Achillea 'Paprika' and 'AppleBlossom' (I pulled all mine a few years ago, decidedto start again!)
Campanula carpatica - white( for the white shade garden)
Penstemon pink and rose
Aster novi-belgi 'Jenny'
Anaphalis (pearly everlasting)
Euphorbia dulcis 'Chameleon' (deep purple)
Myosotis
Fringe leaf bleeding heart - white (I have pink already for years and love it better than the 'regular' type)
Lamium 'White Nancy' border for the white shade garden.

Fair start! I have a few things in the garden to split but havent started that yet!
I will probably leave them until a few days before the plant share in May.

Most of those I am familiar with, all good and lovely plants. You should start the Gaillardia from seed. It isn't a difficult one. i think the only one I don't have or haven't had would be the sedge. And I've only had a cople of Penstemons, and of those one I did from seed. I love the White Nancy, very well behaved and elegant. Bet you put it near the white fringed bleeding heart.

Great finds! I think the only perennials I've bought so far are the small clematis I picked up at Home Depot for $4.99. Got some really different ones. Ooops..forgot..lol! I did pick up some perennial plugs on sale at Schreimers for $0.75 each. Couldn't believe they had the Orange Perfection Phlox that I bought last year for way for money.

Carol I'm on a Public Library terminal in Alberta now and I think you'd better give me the addy of that nursery!!!!!! ;) I've always wanted a Japanese Maple (if the price is reasonable). I've hit every greenhouse I could in Medicine Hat and ooooooooooh did I find some nice looking succulents that I *never* see in Saskatchewan.

I'd be happy to help you shift compost as long as I can do it in small amounts. Doc still has me on limited lifting but I'm getting stronger. :)

We will be in Calgary tonight. Ü

Pam,

You had better have the addys of all those nurseries. I seem to do the Lethbridge-Hinton drive at least once or twice annually.
Last year added Drumheller as well. Not to mention Moose Jaw!!!

Fancyvan, your heucheras are beautiful and looking so healthy.

We have a fab. Lions first annual plant sale here in YWG tis weekend. A ton of Lakeside hostas - cant wait - and hope there are some decent heucheras as well. Think I'll have to go to the hostas list to look at some pix. Keep killing off Fire and Ice. I need some instruction for that one.

What breed is Fancy?

Ginny you'd have to get in contact with fancyvan for the addresses of the Calgary ones. Carol divided Calgary into 1/4's and every day we hit the best in those areas.....there is no way I'd be able to remember where they are. When you go thro Moose Jaw again I'll take you to Keon's and Windmill.........we ran into a woman that runs a greenhouse here and her Mom lives in Moose Jaw. She remembers Moose Jaw's Keon's well and was quite impressed with it.
