Texas Statewide RU! What a Wonderful Day!

McKinney, TX(Zone 7b)

Today was great, everyone! I really enjoyed it (even when my brats were "mommy, let's go...) I can't wait to get home (staying in Bryan tonight & getting a fresh start tomorrow) & get all my goodies in the ground (or into the pond). Thanks for everyone's generosity!

Sandi, it was great meeting you. I think your girls did great, you've done a great job! Hope you're up for another RU in October, same place!

Mary, I'm up for it. As long as it's not during something school related (Mara's in marching band & October is already getting full with football & marching competitions). I had a great time meeting you & everyone else.

Thanks so much for all the plants from everybody. I was so busy handing out plants, I didn't even have time to say thanks to the people who were giving me plants. So I'll thank you now, incase you didn't read it on the other thread.
I have some questions though, about some of the plants. I'm wondering if other people have questions too. Is this the right place to post them?
Anyway, I have hollyhocks from somebody and I need to know how tall the get. And somebody gave me 3 La iris (I think) in a white Walmart sack. Does this ring a bell with anybody? I need to know what they are pretty please.:)

silver,
I don't know how tall hollyhocks will grow in TX, but a neighbor in Minnesota had them nearly 4 feet tall. Maybe they were a different variety.

My mom's hollyhocks are taller than me. Mine are still young & are about 2' tall.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Mine are about 3' tall and will bloom in May...I consider them biennials.

Hmmm. I am wondering if it might be so hot already that they won't have a chance to get a root system going. Maybe I should put them in a pot so I can move them around and see where they like it.

I always thought they had a kinda long tap root but I could be dreaming (or so tired I can't distinguish reality from fantasy!)

I start mine from seeds inside and put out transplants in the ground about the end of August and "coddle and baby" them thru the heat of fall and then they bloom in May the following year. I save the same seeds from them every year and pick up a few different seed colors in seed trades. They sulk till Nov and then start growing thru the winter like a locomotive with no brakes. I treat them as biennials.

Would they make it through the winter up here?
