Do scented geraniums keep their scent when dried? I am wondering if I can dry the leaves and then infuse them in oil to get the scent. I have no experience with this plant other than smelling it in plant shops sometimes.
Question about scented geraniums
We've made rose geranium jellies and used leaves to flavor and scent simple syrup, which is basically sugar/water boiled down a little, leaves go in as you bring it off the boil... that syrup used in a berry sorbet just makes the sorbet smell so good (better the second day if any lasts). So -- I honestly don't know but infusing in oil may work as well as in water; it's certainly worth trying.
Let us know what kinds of recipes you discover, our rose geranium is very happy and prolific - and as we exclaimed the other week, look, spring and it does flowers, too!
My former neighbor used to claim my scented geranium trimmings for potpourri, but I've never tried to infuse or extract them.
That's a great idea to use them to flavor simple syrup! Thanks!
I have several plants that get pretty large in summer, so I have to prune them back... I've discovered that mincing the clippings and sprinkling them around the garden seems to deter the bunnies!
I actually ended up asking some perfumers this question, and the dried leaves can be infused in oil to make it scented. So now I have an excuse to get a whole new set of plants.:)
