When I first started my garden I had envisioned beds of flowers and veggies all tidy and wonderfully growing. No where in my dreams did I picture ripped up plants, gaping holes from digging, yellow spots in the lawn and worn down paths and poo in the parsley.
So now everything has to be done with the dogs in mind. Paths, where I didn't intend them, changed the outlay of the garden. Paths only a foot wide, not for any human to use, of course. The boxwood was pulled after my Heidi (greyhound) repeatedly threw it up. A sandbox was added for puppy fun and hopefully meant less digging in the beds. The lawn is gone - I guess it decided to move to a better neighborhood. Peagravel turned into squeegee for better paw feel. Patios need to make room for doggie beds. The veggie garden is moving to the front yard. New trees must have chicken wire around them with yellow tape glaring "Do not cross", so as not to chew on the new, tender bark. (Okay, so perhaps they can't read but it is what we had available that they could see flapping in the breeze. Although, my husband is convinced that they can read because " They didn't cross it, did they?"). No aluminum edging that cut paws (I am beginning to hate benderboard, by the way, as it creeps back up over the years). Little fences in areas that are being trampled and learning not to love any particular plant too much. Buying more compost because Cricket likes to eat it, (I really don't know why). And my personal favorite - My garden shoes that I left buy the door ending up in the birdbath, which is used for drinking.
So what have you changed for your dogs (or cats)? We gharden differently than gardeners without pets.
