I'm going to Wichita tomorrow to check some nurseries out. So please tell just where did you find these beauties. I am planning on stopping at Johnsons Garden Center, then not sure where else I will hit. Looking for a nice size Musa Basjoo, I had the one that didn't come back this year. Need a replacement. It can't be to nice of a size, taking my car. I figured with all the liquid sunset we are getting, tomorrow would be a good day to go looking.

Got back from Houston last week and of course I brought back two small Hibiscus. One is yellow and not sure of the other yet. It has the name on it but haven't looked it up yet.

Your two plants are a beauty and so healthly looking.

Linda you need to go see Deree's nursey, the addy is about 37th and south broadway, just about a couple blocks north of Macarthur and broadway, east side of street, has a black wrought iron fence out in front.
They have 3ft basjoos with a lot of pups for abpout 45 bucks.
Then head out to Hongs nursery ,go east from 31st south and rock road,by the airbase, or come get me and I'll take you around!!!

Hey Tropicman, those are just beautiful!!! Where can we find that double yellow? My SIL and I were just talking about the DY Hib., and trying to find out the name of one, and where to get it! Thanks, Krispi

Tropicman, sorry I didn't come buy to get you. But I got up this morning and decided not to go then about 8:30 I was in my car headed to Wichita. I stopped first at Hongs and of course when I got there it just started raining so here I was walking around in the rain (with a umbrella in the trunk of my car), after about 15 min. a employee asked me if I wanted a umbrella. By then I was wet so I said no. Didn't buy a thing but I plan on going there again when it isn't raining.

Then I went to DeRee's and fell in love all over again. First time there and they have a great nursery. I got me a Musa Basjoo with 4 pups, a Prom Girl, then 4 other plants and another EE. I spent $90. I did tell them it was my first time there and I was really impressed. I loved there pond they have set up just west of the house. The three plastic ponds together. I want one real bad. Thanks for telling me about DeRee's, and Hong's.

Then I went to Johnsons only got about 5 plants, only spent a little under $17. There was a few things I wanted they didn't have. I wanted some Dog Be Gone. I used it last year and it did keep the cats, and my pugs out of the flower beds where they were placed.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well I went to the nursery today where I bought it and they were all out.
I just looked on the tag,its from Hines Horticulutre,Fulshear Texas.
Hope that helps you.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Linda I just must have missed you,I was there this morning, and then went to Derees about lunch time,to buy some more mexican pepples for the fountain.
Yes there my favorite nursery, although Johnsons had 1 gal, basjoo bananas for $13,95 today. Then I went to Senic landscape after lunch, and bought some pond plants.
Next time let me know when your coming and we'll make a day of it!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

The musa's at Johnson's were only about 15 in. tall if that. I looked for the Butterball but didn't see one or I would have had one as well. I bet we walked right by each other at DeRee's cause I was there about noon as well. I know I left Johnson's about 1:00 and went to my sons house on 13th and Salina and visited with him until 1:40. So like I said I bet we passed each other and didn't even realize it. How funny. A day of it does sound like fun. But the way I spend money at Nursery's I would be broke.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I'll bet we did too!
But I don't notice people when shopping for plants,I'm looking for a good buy!!!
Well you no what they say,you can't take it with you when your dead and gone,or when your spouse knows you got a little extra, thats burning a whole in your pocket!!!LOL

Hines, huh? I live about 7 mi. from the nursery in Fulshear. This particular facility is a growing and distribution center, about 300 acres. I was lucky to tour the facility a couple of years ago, extremely interesting. Most of their stock goes to points north, with Dallas being their largest market. I think they have 7 facilities, with the main one somewhere in CA.

They do growing from seed and from cuttings. In an effort to improve efficiency, they have a program for the employees where they get a bonus for each cutting that actually takes. They told us cutting propagation improved to almost 100% when this was implemented. Their hibiscus section was absolutely gorgeous.

The planting machines were absolutely awsome to watch in operation.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Vossner I bet that was a tour you won't forget. I couldn't imagine touring a nursery and watching a machine plant flowers. I bet it was amazing to see. I always thought of all the plants being planted by people not machines.

I thought so also. but no, most is machine planted. The labor is used mostly in seedling propagation and in loading orders in the trucks. True, a very interesting experience I won't soon forget.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I bet that would be something to see, also watching them make the cuttings,I wonder what rooting hormone they use!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

somebody asked that question! they seemed extremely secretive about things like that. They also seemed overwhelmed by the competition. a couple of people made casual references to Monrovia and Colorspots and we could see their facial expressions tensing up, lol. It is a hard business, no doubt.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I guess they are just like a fine chef not wanting to share there secrets. Which I can understand.

Linda

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes ,but people have and are learning the secrets to tissule cultures, from what I have read doesn't seem to be all the difficult, important thing is everything being good and sterolized.
Time room and patiences, well that leaves me out!!!

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 9b)

Thanks, Tropicman, I am going to see if HD. has them, " Hines Horticultural", from Fulshear, Tx. (Butter Ball) Thanks, Krispi
