Hello everyone!
I have a wicked container with AV seed in it and I have so much algae on the top that I am afraid it will choke my seeds. I have one coming up and I don't want it to die...it took so long for it to come.
Help please and thank you.
Joanne
How do I get rid of algae?
some folks use Physan

it's possible that your mix it too wet/heavy and be the cause of the algae. Others on this list use a home remedy, Lysol I think. but I'll let others who use it answer that part.
Okey dokey....would that be for algae and moss? Not sure which is which but yes it probably is too wet. I have one violet coming though and I don't want to lose it...it has taken me three months to get to where we are at.

Joanne when doing seeds " well anything but must with seeds" best to sterilize before putting down seeds.
Too wet and not enough air circulation is going to cause more algae . And yes algae can choke your seeds and roots on plants too.
A light misting with air circulation might help seedlings. How large are they ?
With them being tiny you can't put too much on them or they will die.
This link brings you to how Keyrings does seeds.
I don't know how to do the quote thing but she tells in directions " For seeds that may take a long time to germinate, it may be good to sterilize the mix by baking it. Place moist mix in the oven and bake for 3 hrs at 170F. Allow to cool and then store in a sealed container. "

Hope this helps !
I was reading on and at time of sowing she does say a good idea " Mist the surface with water (optional: add a drop of physan or hydrogen peroxide to help prevent damping off) "
Maybe you could try this now and it will help ?
Morning!
Thank you for all the replies!
I did squirt some hydrogen peroxide on them yesterday so don't know if it is too late or not.
I will do the sterilizing thing...never read that before. I always use damping off but maybe my solution was not strong enough. It has always worked with other seeds but not with AV seeds.
Thanks again...appreciate all the help.

Your welcome. I've never grown Av's by seeds so I'm sure others can help you more !
