One of our front beds faces South and it backed by our house.
The wall is 10" of solid brick.
The bed is so warm that daffs come up in January/Feb only to be frozen out before flowering most years.
No or little water hits it in the Winter.
The perfect spot for trying a little experiment.
We left some Colocasia esculenta (plain green bulb EE's) we had grown there out this year.
No mulch, no prep, just left them in the ground.
Here's the result found just this evening.

We pulled it off!
I live in Missouri, zone 5b, and we always leave our EE in the ground - it comes back just fine.
Many people will find things like this coming back specially after this last winter which was so mild. Most people had a zone or two less then expected weather temps. I have had good luck in zone 6 leaving the common colocasia esculenta out if planted in a dry area specially for winter. You should look into trying two plants I have introduced Colocasia Pink china possibly the toughest colocasia in existance and close behind it would be colocasia big dipper both have come back with out protection in very cold winters but still I suggest the mulching to be on the safe side specially the first year or two. I have also had very good luck with Col Gigantea. In cases with pink china and Gigantea I find that if slightly mulched I can still have tubers that are 6 to 9 inches long and around 6 inches across these make huge plants the following seasons. In most cases large tubers like this rot first as they hold the most moisture and freeze easier in winter then your pups come up around spring. Hope this helps and good luck.
I have an overstock of Dipper so it will definitely be staying out this coming Winter.
The Pink I got from you I wintered in the GH this year.
I need to build up some extras but will definitely be trying it outside too.
That shot of your Mom in her patch of Pink really peaked my interest in it.lol

My China Pink is up with 5 leaves. I did cover it with straw. It is looking good.
Kinda funny before it came up I fed it really good with plant food. Seems like it was only a couple of days later and there were 2 little starts coming through the ground. Now there is a total of three.
I got another one few months back from Brian and there were 3 in the pot. I separated them and they are about ready to be planted outside. I kept them in the house for a while and then moved to the green house. Now I have them sitting on the patio in the sun.
I was like you Ric when I saw Brians mom posing with one I knew I had to have it.

I was at my mothers today putting in a canna field on the back part of here property. She promises to keep it weeded they are new hybrids so hopefully she will keep them growing good. Her pink chinas were already up as well as her bananas and gingers. The pink chinas over wintered extremely well with tubers 9 inches long and 6 inches across. Huge tubers so I am expecting her yard to be much better this year than last. I will try to take pics soon of it. poping up
