I've got babies!!!!

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

I was messing with my AVs this morning and lo and behold I have baby leaves. It's a NOID, but that's OK, too. I'm excited because these are the first ones ever. I've been the official AV killer until recently. I thought I would still have weeks and/or months to wait!!

Way to go!!!

Allison, With the exception of one, they are lovely and healthy. I am having trouble with "Smarty Pants" and it doesn't look like it's going to make it. Everything else you sent is healthy and putting out new leaves. I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed them.

After I ran over here to the computer and posted the picture of my new babies, I went back to the greenhouse and continued on with what I was doing and found another leaf with new babies. One is good, two is unbelievable for me!!

I spent today rearranging my indoor greenhouses and getting all the pots with leaves in one area and all the plantlets in one area and making sure everything was watered. The greenhouses with the heat mats have certainly done a wonderful job for the AVs. I have some miscellaneous plants that have been given to me (3 orchid plants, some wandering jew that needs to grow roots, a mini bridal veil, and a couple of others I can't think of right now) and I put those all on one shelf. I had a good time today.

I recently bought two really big healthy NOIDs from Home Depot (even though I swore I wasn't going to) because they each had several plants in them. And I was good. I only bought two of them.
So now they are all divided up and sitting pretty.

Diane so glad your babies and leaves are doing good ! Keep up the great growing :))

It's very exciting for me. I've always loved AVs and eventually killed every single one. I would drool on them in the stores, and then move on. I could not see just buying something to let it die a slow and miserable death.

Both of my daughters have beautiful plants. One daughter never waters her ONE plant until it looks wilted, never has fed it or repotted it--and it has been blooming constantly for years. The other daughter has a group of AVs on a table in front of a window and her plants get full hot sun most of every day of the year. She does feed and water hers regularly and they bloom constantly.

But then along came DG, and I've learned so much. So now I really am an addict and it's all your faults, all of you. You should never ever have taught me how to do it right!! And provided plants and leaves!! This is something I can play with in the house when my back won't allow me to be outside. I never knew there so many varieties until DG. I thought they were all pink or purple, because that's all I ever saw at Home Depot or Lowe's.

And so I thank you all. You have provided an amazing amount of information and patience.

Wow!!! Congratulations!!! This is very exciting....I don't care how many times one does it, it is still very exciting when you see your success after nurturing those leaves!

It is almost like giving birth!!

Thanks for sharing with us!

It seems silly to the "outside world" to get excited over leaves, I guess, but here everyone understands how cool it is to have new babies.

JUst wondering many times we see babies exciting babies :)) How have they grown ! Have they bloomed yet ?
Be fun to go to old threads and up-date our growing success stories :))

Oh wow, your babies looks so good. I'm trying to get babies to grow. It's been 2months and nothing yet..... All my leaves are still alive except for 2 (out of about 20) .

I keep looking all the time and nothing is happening. I did pull one leaf out of the potting mix, and it did have roots so that is a good sign.

Oh, I just realized this was originally from April. How are they now? And how long did it take for those baby leaves to grow from the leaf?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Some leaves give babies fast some slow Maureen . I've had some that gave me babies in 4 weeks and some almost one year. Keeping them warm and giving them lots of light helps. Some people last winter used heat mats. This is the hardest time of the year for growing babies.
Diane how have your babies grown ! Sure love to see some new pictures "_)

Well, ladies, sad to say that I have lost all of those babies from this spring. I spent most of the summer in the hospital and the care they were given was just not what they needed. I lost some of the bigger plants also. I have taken leaves off of the big plants I had left and am trying again, but only started them this last week. I had to just convince myself that they are just plants after all. Not in the cards for this year. But I still have hope. Thank you for asking after all this time.

Oh I wish you luck with your new leaves and hope your feeling better.

They ARE just plants, and your health comes first!

I know I feel guilty when I have to let something slide and then end up losing a plant, or throwing food out (like those bananas I "should" have made into banana bread), but you can only do what you can do, you know? And sometimes you have to cut yourself some slack. That's doubly true when you're in the hospital, as things are just beyond your reach then, but remember to give yourself a break now that you're home again, also.

LMK if you'd like some additional leaves to put down... Looks like our milder weather will continue into next week, so I should be able to send something off to you... I realize you might be busy with holiday stuff now and prefer not to mess with them, in which case I'll just have to put a package together for you in spring. I think our "AVs for knitting needles" trade last fall was pretty cool!

Fayetteville, NC(Zone 8a)

critter--Send away and thank you very much. I have lots of time on my hands. I am medically retired now. Re Christmas: my packages went in the mail last week, my part of the house is all decorated except my bedside table, and the gifts that are to be given out here are a cinch to wrap or put in gift bags. Aren't I smart?
