CLOSED: Cast Iron Plant

Two Rivers, WI

Anyone have any cast iron plant they would trade for postage? Have checked for it around here but so far no luck. I need something that my mother can enjoy. She is in a care center/home. Neither the aids or my mother can water any plants that I have taken there which dry out and die because of lack of watering combined with the high room temperature that is maintained. Even thou I see her weekly, plants just don't seem to make it.

Try adding water absorbing crystals to the pot (just a teaspoon or so) and soaking the soil thoroughly each visit. I did that with the plants in my office that get neglected when i travel and they are doing pretty well.

I don't have any of the cast iron but I do have some bird's nest snake plant and I've really neglected it a few times and it's been just fine. :)

Have you tried some pretty succulents? Does her room have a window?

Look for a ZZ (Zamiaculcus zamifolia) plant; I have seen them at the big box stores around here. They are not very pretty when they are young but they soon develop a lovely vase shape.
Here is the best part - they rarely need water! They are not fussy about light either. I have a large one that I water maybe once a month - if I remember. They are amazing plants and I do not know why more folks do not grow them.
I have plenty of Aspidistra (cast iron) and would be happy to share but I think the ZZ would be easier and prettier in the long run.
