Kaempferia rotunda Grande'
Nice color. I have the regular Kaemp.. it has bloomed already and now the gorgeous leaves are forming
which kaempferia? Some bloom first and then have foliage and other get the foliage and then bloom throughout the summer? Maybe Kaemferia rotunda? Do you have any photos? Foliage or blooms are okay.
Where the blooms purple and white?
I just love love kaempferia, I think they are too often over looked. It's nice to know that someone else out there likes them also.
Fellow kaempferia lover,
Liz :)
yep, it was rotunda. I'll take a picture of the leaf tomorrow. I have another one that popped up its leaves couple days ago in a place I don't remember planting any there. Looks more like 'satin checks'. I'll take a picture of that one tomorrow as well and post.
I love gingers and have the perfect place for them.. a swamp. No watering needed, filtered sun and they grow like weeds down there.

Hi Trish,
I can't wait to see your pics, I'm going to check your hyperlink in just a sec.
your kaempferias don't rot in the winter, being dormant in damp ground? This is good to know, thank you ma'am.

I had this wrong on my website for several years, until John Banta (the guy who first introduced this plant) corrected me. It is NOT a form of Kaempferia rotunda or a hybrid - it is a separate, as yet undescribed species. Should simply be referred to as Kaempferia 'Grande' or Kaempferia sp. 'Grande'.
There are actually several species of Kaempferia where the flowers come up before the foliage. One beautiful one that I have not seen in the nursery trade is Kaempferia candida which has white flowers that look much like your Curcuma 'Sleeping Beauty' and come up before the foliage. There are several forms, but most have plain green leaves (no pattern) and it actually looks more like a Curcuma than a Kaempferia.
