I was planning on ordering some things from Richter's but I'm not sure I want to take my chances with them. They have really good prices though and a nice selection.
Can anyone turn me onto an other mail order company with low prices, good selection and healthy plants?
Please recommend a good, cheap herb company
CaptMicha,
Although the developers have pretty much replaced farms, meadows and woods around here with Mansionette orchards, there do remain a few pockets of old-style country, and one of them is an herb business a lady began in her back yard about 30 years ago:
Stillridge
10370 Route 99
Woodstock, MD 21163
(410) 465-8348
She has a large selection of thymes for $2.25, and most of the other herbs and scented geraniums are about $3.95. She often has specials, and has sumptuous looking lettuces and other vegies and some flowers, as well. She can guarantee NO CHEMICALS on these plants. The whole experience of visiting her, her gardens, helpers, pets is like nothing in any other commercial business I know of - humanity restored.
Behnke's is selling herbs (including nice selection of sages - S. leucantha, S. greggii, S. off. purpurea, S. rutans, others (spelling?)) for $2.19 - they are also very knowledgeable and dependable.
And then - there's US on DG :)
Papa Geno's herb farm- they're online and have a lot.
The cook`s garden.com, seems pretty reasonable, I have their catalog, but have yet to order.
Are you very far from northern Virginia? I've gotten very nice herb plants (and wonderful heirloom tomato and pepper plants) from DiBaggio Herbs in Chantilly. Most of the herbs are around $2 a pot and I've found some things there I've never seen elsewhere such as comfrey.
Pine Tree has nice small pkg. so you aren't over loaded with seeds.
Papa geno's prices are good but their shipping is high.
Yes, DeBaggio's is wonderful! DH & I took a little road trip down there last weekend and came back with some fun things, including some intresting basils and a new (to me, anyway) kind of French Thyme called 'Provincal' I think.
Micha, I'm generally layering & propagating my herbs (especially thyme & oregano) all summer long, so any time you're up this way, give me a holler. :-) I'd offer to send things your way, but I have too many boxes to try to get out this month already!
Ok, I"m headed to virginia next month, over by the coast though, Virginia beach, how far is DeBaggios from there?
I want to go LOL
kathy
LOL... it's a couple of hours, at least... It is pretty close to Dulles Airport. http://www.debaggioherbs.com/
Close to Dullues? Ohhh... Near Arlington?
Critter, I feel like we had a trade or were supossed to have a trade. I don't know if you remember but if you do, did you get your part? I have soooo many trades to catch up on from when I was sick.
I need to do those before I start any new ones... No matter how tempting new ones might be!
Virginia Beach would be more like 4-5 hours from Chantilly. LOL
Just guessing but I would think Chantilly would be maybe 15-20 miles from Arlington?
I have a green santolina I got as a little $2 plant there a couple of years ago. Planted it in the rockiest, most awful and dry spot in the yard. It's now about 3 feet by 4 feet and just gorgeous. Getting ready to bloom now too. I like it much better than the gray santolina. I want to get some more.
Micha, we did some Dmailing last spring, mostly just chatting.... I think we were hoping to cross paths at some point and do some in-person plant swapping, so we never did get around to arranging a trade by mail. I'm catching up here too.... so I know just what you mean! Well, maybe you'll make it up this way or I'll head down in your direction later this summer, and we'll do a little plant swapping.... I generally have more herb divisions available as the summer goes along anyway.
There are good directions to the greenhouse on the DeBaggio's link I posted. :-)
I wouldn't mind an outing to Stillridge Herb Farm as I've never been there. Does anyone know if she accepts visitors or whether she's even open this time of year? Or should I call her myself to find out... :~)
I order a lot of herb seed from Gurney. I'm always pleased, and have good results. I also like Pinetree Seed Company. The herb seed always sprouts, and does well in my climate .
Hi, I just found an online company that I think has great prices. I have not yet ordered so can't say what their product quality is, but they are herb association partners and shared good links. They also sell to garden centers in the Mid-West. They are called Pantry Garden Herbs. Check them out!!
