I have a motherwort plant growing in my garden, I didn't know it would survive the winter but here it is, looking like it's on 'roids.
It's very lush and pretty but what herbal purpose does it serve?
Motherwort, What to do with it?
Most uses of motherwort are shown in its name - an old name for the uterus is "the mother." Motherwort's been used to ease childbirth, help stop false labor, and as a general purpose birthing and uterine aide. Some people use it for menstrual cramps or to start a slow period, but because it also is a little sedating, it can be helpful for menstrual anxiety. But it's not just for women. It has been smoked for its sedating effect. The herbalist Culpeper wrote that "There is no better herb to drive melancholy vapours from the heart.":) It also provides a green dye on wool.
Hmm... Being that I'm not pregnant, it doesn't seem to have much use for me.
