A new experiment

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Not long ago I thought I would try an experiment by using 100% Perlite as my medium. I did not really think it would work but I thought I would give it a try. Well a day or so ago I looked at it and sure enough, there it was, my first little Perlite baby. So who knows, it may work out to be a good thing. We will see. Here is the tray with my own design. I have two plastic trays the same size. I have one with holes in it and the other one without holes. I sit the one with holes in the other one with 4 bottle caps in between the two trays. This way I can water and water and never have to worry about them having cold wet feet. If the bottom tray gets too much water in it, I just remove the top tray and pour the water out.

And look closely on the top right corner, and you will see the little babies.

Jesse,Congratulations!! Don't you just love the babies? I like your double setup. I am not nearly as organized - I started a bunch of babies sort of unprepared, so right now I have my cake cooling racks sitting on/in my jelly roll pans with the little wicked pots on top. LOL The jelly roll pans are really only used during the fall season - other than that cookies are baked on stones. Whatever works, right?

Finally got my camera back from DS with dead batteries - maybe I can post some pictures tomorrow.

Thanks Sharon. I am glad that you finally got your camera back. So you cook cookies on stones? That sounds really interesting.

Jesse

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Jesse,
I got a couple of the baking stones from Pampered Chef and will never cook cookies on anything else. I imagine any pizza stone would work as well. If you aren't familiar with them, you can check them out on the pampered chef web site. They are fabulous for cookies, biscuits, all kinds of things. Comes in handy since all my other pans now hold plants :-)

Oh my pots full of pans ! I just buy those plastic boxes. I like them they hold the leaf cups no worry about spilling , sturdy and they can be bleached. The tops work as perfect trays for me :))

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I use whatever I can find to hold my cups. Right now I have my latest set of 100 leaves sitting in an under the bed box storage box. It is big so that I can water them all at the same time. When I have pans that get too old or yucky looking for cooking, then I use them for trays to put my cups on. Just about anything will work if it is good and steady.

Sharon,

Thanks for the info on the stones. I will definitely check into that.

Jesse

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Allison,
I had a bunch of the plastic boxes a while back to hold sewing stuff, and didn't bother keeping the lids on them. I reorganized (well, really just sort of shuffled stuff around), and recently started looking for them to use for the plants, and now all I can find are the lids. No telling where those plastic boxes went - and there's about 15 of them. LOL

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I use the lids for trays for my plants !
I only use things that can be bleached, disinfected .

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I just thought I would give you guys an update as to how this experiment is going. And I am happy to report great news. One leaf had already had some babies a few days ago and when I checked last night another one had babies. This is so ecxiting.I love being parents with all of you, growing all of these sweet little babies. They sure do bring a lot of joy to me and I'm sure they do the same for you guys. Let's keep up the good work and keep them going. Here is a photo of them. One is very tiny buy I have arrows pointing at the babies.

One thing to mention about using all perlite is that it is so clean and not messy like it is with soil. I just thought I would tell you in case anyone of you wants to try it.

Good growing! The babies are so cute, and the other leaves look perky & healthy also.... they'll be popping up ears any day now, I bet!

I've been putting leaves down in little inividual cups, but I just took a few leaves from my new plants & thought I'd try something a little different... I had extra take-out containers (ones I'd already poked holes in top/bottom for wintersowing but hadn't used), so I put an inch or so of moist light potting mix into them, packed it down well, then stuck a bunch of leaves. I think it might work well, especially for small mini leaves. I can use tops without holes from other same-size containers as a bottom watering tray the way you did, Jesse... thanks for that idea!

Laurie keeps her leaves in pure perlite. She has been doing it for a long time.

YES Spider Lauire does and I thi she posted a step by step thread. One with Streptocarpus leaves too !
I know people whi grow everything in Perlite or Perlite/Vermiculite half and half for allergy and other reasons !

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

Allison I have terrible allergies! maybe i need to try the perlite/ vermiculite :) i am glad you mentioned this!

Jesse good thread :) glad you are getting good results with your perlite

Try the Perlite, not the Vermiculite. It acts sort of like sand and does not drain very well. That is what I have found in my own personal experience.

Jesse

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I do not understand why some people find it necessary to brag on a few of their friends every time someone does something. I did not know that Laurie puts hers down in perlite and therefore was not copying her. And even if I did copy her, so what? I think this has gone on long enough and someone needed to say something and I thought I'd be the one to say it since you have targeted me more than once.

I did this purely as an experiment, although when I water DH and I neither one can stay in that room for very long because the smell of west soil bothers both of us. I have some 72 cell trays with bottoms and lids and I think I am going to try using them next time with the Perlite. I need the added humidity where I live and I've got some that are covered right now making babies. In fact, I think they work faster than the ones not covered. I have had them in a foil sheet cake pan with a clear top for days and days and they do fine. I can see the moisture on the top of the lid so I know they are getting the water that they need. But I also open the lid occasionally to get fresh air in and to let them have a breathing period. I had put down some really ugly leaves before someone said not to because if they leaves were not in great shape they would not make babies. Well, in all of my ignorance or lack of knowledge I put them down anyway and they are making some huge babies and they are full of babies. So my job for today is taking babies from mommas. I hope that everything goes well with my potting today and I hope that all of you have a happy day too.

Well I think when I try something or someone else trys something it is always helpful to know others have tired these methods and how they have done. Good or bad. This is a process of sharing experiences new or old . I like as much imput on any growing methods and if your friends, Mom and someone you read about did well or poorly with these methods I do Appreciate this !
Just when I find a good link I go threw the Stickies and see if the information Laurie and others wokred hard to put there for us if it is there yet.
If it is not then I like to Dmail Laurie to enter the information, links so she may enter them into our Stickies so everyone can look there to have them anytime they need !

Kelly I have met a lot of people first person a lady at the first Av Show/Sale I went to couple years ago. She grew everything in hald Periite and vermiculite and had for years. I mean her plants too. Lot's of people are alergic to peat and moss and different thins. I was surprised at first ot hear this method but her plants of years old an lady who had been growing for year plants were stunning and healthy !
Many people or their family have allergies and must do this. There are other methods of growing like this .
I have always been interested in them but never converted to them 100 percent though I have done all Perlite or 50/50 with vermic. There are also different grades of each of theses !
I just got lazy to buying both. lol
A couple years ago the only way I could get Streps to root was straight Perlite !
It's fun to share information . And it's good to know others have tired it this way also and how it worked for them !
I do Appreciate Spider Sweet Anna letting us know of anyone else having good experiences that can help me growing in the future !
I most Appreciate you Anna ! and everyone . Everyone can grow the same or grow different .

Plantcrazii, on the leaves that already have babies, when do you plant to transplant, and what medium are you gonna use?

thanks for sharing our experiment. I might give it a try using my SEB leaves.

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Vossner,

I use 60% Perlite and 40% Scotts African Violet Soil. And some I have already transplanted and the last litte ones will be done tonight. I have found that if they are too small they are very hard to handle so I let them grow a little before I transplant them. So by tomorrow the should all be done. I have a lot more that I did not show you. And a lot of babies. But they are just so cute.

Oh one thing that I have found that is very important, is to transplant them when they are dry. The first ones I ever did I had just watered and the roots are almost impossibe to separte when they are wet. So that is my little tidbit of information that I hope will help. I will make sure to do it dry in the future.

Allison
I didn't know ...duh...that people had allergies to peat, etc. Kind of dumb since there is always someone who has an allergy to something, but it just never dawned on me. My youngest is always complaing about allergies. One day I felt so bad that I vacummed everything that I possibly could, washed everything I possibly could, changed the AC filters and I don't know what else, but by the end of the day I was exhausted and she reported only minimal improvement in symptoms. Maybe it was/is the peat?

You have given me something to consider, thanks.

Today I found another new baby playing in the perlite. This is great. I would love a new baby each day.

Jesse

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

Congrats on all your new babies Jesse. Looks like the perlite is working for you. There seem to be so many ways to start leaves and grow the african violet plants.

I continue to struggle starting leaves and not having some of them die, and then when they do produce babies and turn into plantlets I have trouble getting them to bloom. It is so special to me when they do bloom I am constantly looking at and admiring them.

Silver Spring, MD

I'm having the best success I have ever had. I used matting this time and covered the tray with a plastic dome. I only lost 3 leaves out of 24. The other 21 have ears of various sizes.

Not bragging. Just so happy. This was going to be my last try. If it didn't work this time I was going to give up on propagating and stick to raising violets.

The big trick now is to pot the babies and have them stay healths and grow.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I have grown by leaf only now 1 1/2 to two years. I have done it everyway you could imagine almost. Even in a large zip lock bag a leaf placed on a damp paper towel gave me a nice healthy baby I was so proud of.
But always the fastest, safest, fool proof way for me has been 3 to 5 oz. solo cup, light soil-less mix with half perilite. hold in cup fill with soil, always use clean healthy age leaf, cut stem short one inch or less,( if you are not expericend please cut your leaves straight across you will have less rot and more chance for a baby ) stick into the middle of cup/soil down until leaf touch soil. Water threw real good, let drain put them in clear plastic boxes to avoid spilling. Place in window, under light. Keep evenly moist never let them dry out and don't keep to wet. Keep warm, air circulation and humdity helps .I feed mine is soil mix does not have food.
Hubby does the same thing for me last several boxes of leaves that came I could not do. He likes to wick them. All his leaves grew babies or are doing well. All the five Storytella babies I am growing for April miniatures Hubby set down this way !
Who ever is able waters them.
Just this year I have grown a good thousand babies ! Not bragging but it's easy ! Keep it simple ! I have taught many people to do this nurses and others who say they never could before that have now grown dozens of babies !
A good healthy leaf with good growing culture will bloom young ! Ask Rob from violet Barn :))
Just keep it simply, or if you have a method that works for you use it and have fun.
African violets are so easy to progate is one of the reasons they are the number one house plant to grow and share in the World !

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I agree with that Allison. If it is not fun, then don't do it. It does take time and patience. My others are in ⅓ African Violet soil and ⅔ Perlite. And all of them are doing fine too. I'm the type of person that likes to experiment with different things so that is why I did the experiment with the Perlite. But I did not have a control group. I used the save leaves in the Perlite. Next I want to try the same leaves in different mediums to see if one produces babies faster than the others. I have also experimented with keeping them covered and got great results with that too. It is just fun growing things. Hope you all enjoy it too.

Jesse

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I root my a.v. leaves in hydrogenated water crystals, just setting the leaves on top of the crystals and they root great with no covering nor rot!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

That's neat ! Do you keep them there until the babies get big ? have any pictures. How long have you been doing your leaves like this ?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, some photos of them would be great. I would love to see how you do yours.

Jesse

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I think Lorry was supposed to do that experiment for us and report back, looks like we have the answer! Very cool Kay!!! Thanks

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I will see if DH can find time to take some pictures for me to post. The AV leaves I am rooting are at work. I am currently rooting begonia LEAVES in this wonderful product, but they are in my office, too.

I have been using these hydrocrystals for a couple of years or maybe more. I also have Aeschynanthus aka lipstick vine LEAVES rooting right now in the same manner. I pulled these out this morning to check for roots, and yep - each leaf has roots!

I want to remind you that you do not put more than ONE-EIGHTH of the stem bottom into the gel - just set the cutting on top of it, and push it in only 1/8 inch. Sometimes I cover them, but most of the time I don't. I just give them good light and never have to worry about watering them. I also root only in crystal-clear plastic drinking glasses so I can see when they have rooted.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Sounds fun ! Is it expensive ?
I think Lorry mentioned using something like these ?

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Hello everyone!

It is so very nice to see how everyone pots up their babies...one question...do any of you cut the top of the leaf off?

Thanks for all the info.

Joanne

Eureka, CA

Some I've cut, some I haven't.... I haven't seen much difference, but I'm pretty new at all this ~ not even six months worth of trying under my belt yet!

Sanna

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Some I do some I don't I see no difference and if a sterile cutting tool is not used just help to get infection into the cut.
I do cut when the babies are getting so big. I set mine in middle of the cup and get loades of babies back and front . Then the tall leaf is needing cut so babies can have room to get up !

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

That is what is happening to me Allison. I had about a dozen huge EverGrace leaves down. And they did nothing. Well that is what I thought. And when I started seeing that the soil looked like it had been disturbed, I started looking closer. And every single one of them has babies, behind them. I would have never thought that. So it looks like in a couple months I'll have about a dozen EverGrace to share.

Jesse

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I will take some photos later tonight to show you guys.

Jesse

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

Ohhhh... space babies!! I got my first one the other day, I got EverLove, the foliage is SO green!!!

Congrats!

Janis

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Ok Janis don't be buying all the Space babies if you want me to send you some !
