Just thought I would show everyone what is blooming at my house! I have a few in full bloom, some with inflos getting ready to pop and other babies that I will hopefully see bloom next year.
First of all is my Generic white and yellow from a neighbour's house after the hurricanes.....
My beautiful babies
LOL, you should have sold your India plant for $300 and bought another one here for $20! Lovely pics! Thanks for sharing them. Your Candy Stripe doesn't look like the cultivar Candy Stripe though. It could be Pinwheel Rainbow. Did you buy it from Maui Plumeria Gardens? If so, that Candy Stripe being sold is mislabeled, and it is actually Pinwheel Rainbow. Candy Stripe looks like this picture below. Those are some good-lookin' seedlings too! Man, I love your set up right on the water like that. Awesome! You don't have issues! LOL! My husband thinks I have issues too. I tell him he is lucky that I don't collect more expensive things...like jewelry!
I start all of my plants in pots, and with being hit by three hurricanes full strength in two years, it is easier to safeguard my babies if they are in pots that I can bring into the garage. I am really honestly scared to put some of my nice ones in the ground, if we get hit again this season then I will lose them. Until I am able to take some cuttings so I will always have a backup, they will have to stay in pots.
Thanks for the kudos Clare, I tell my husband the exact same thing.......it could be diamonds instead of plumies! I did get the cutting from Maui Plumeria Gardens, I order from her every time I go to Maui. Thanks for the heads up, so I have a Pinwheel Rainbow instead. I do love that Candy Stripe that you posted......where can you get one that you know is actually a candy stripe?
Candy Stripe is an odd one because some sellers have been known to just give their rainbow the name "Candy Stripe" without realizing that they are using a registered cultivar name. I think Florida Colors sells Candy Stripe, and I think they will ship to you.
There really isn't any yellow and if Candy Stripe should have yellow then I doubt I have one. Hmmm....how do you find out what a plumeria really is?
Ipakosh, do you know anyone in Florida that can go buy some plumies for you? Richlin of Frangipani Farms is going out of business and is selling his stock at reduced prices. He sells Candy Stripe, and in fact, that is his picture above. He won't ship though. Here is his web site: http://my.enom.com/25328/page99.htm
Also, HawaiiSandy, Sandy Lavarias, lives in Hawaii, and you may be able to buy directly from her the next time you are in Hawaii. She sells on eBay, and you can contact her through her auctions: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ50QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsassZhawaiisandy She is an extremely reputable source for plumies, and I'm sure she has Candy Stripe among other fantastic ones.
I may have spoken too soon as your Candy Stripe does have the right petal shape, but the colors don't look right to me to be the actual cultivar, but it is lovely in any case. Candy Stripe is also known to have little to no scent and frequently throws six petals per flower compared to the normal five: http://www.plumeria101.com/master_gallery/candy_stripe.html Colors can also be affected by coolness or heat so it is possible that the colors will become more intense as your heat and humidity does. I think you are right that, if your Candy Stripe has no yellow, it is not the actual cultivar.
Edited to fix spelling

Thanks for the info Clare. I went to the website, it says that they do ship........I can get them to ship to a friend in Florida I guess. I have bought so many seeds off ebay..........I don't think I can stop anytime soon! LOL!!
Hi Ipakosh,
The only way you can be sure that you have the exact cultivar that you paid for is to buy from reputable sellers. Some sellers will stick a name on a plumie because it looks similar, and this is not acceptable. That doesn't mean that you can't own a whole bunch of lovely unnamed ones! I've received lots of plumies which were unnamed or misnamed, and that fact doesn't change their beauty or their value to me. Registered named cultivars are supposed to look unique, which means that, if you compare all sorts of characteristics like growth habit, leaf shape, leaf tips, leaf position, flower size, petal shape, fragrance, flower color, etc., you should be able to say it is that cultivar if it matches in every single way. This is hard to do, and if you are not sure of a cultivar's name, it is best to sell it or trade it as an unknown. Some sellers will not do all this comparison and will just stick a name on it because they can sell it for more money than if they sold it as an unknown, and this is not right. I have ones in my garden that I lost the tag, and even if it matches all the characteristics of, say, Aztec Gold, I will still label it as "Aztec Gold?" because I am not 100% sure of the name. Some are just labled "Unknown Pink" or "Unknown Rainbow" because identification is not possible. There are much more unnamed hybrid seedlings out there than named cultivars that most people just have unnamed ones. Sites like the Plumeria 101 gallery and publications like this one: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/OF-31.pdf help to distinguish the characteristics of named cultivars. HTH
Ipakosh, I'm not sure that Richlin will ship at this point, but you can try to order from him. His property has been sold, and he is just liquidating is stock. I just checked Florida Colors Variety List, and they do carry Candy Stripe: http://www.floridacolors.com/ They are the best of the best, and I buy from them and from HawaiiSandy almost exclusively now.
Clare,
I just emailed Richlin and he informed me that it is true, he isn't shipping at the moment. If he is actually liquidating stock it might be tempting enough to fly over for a day and see what I can pick up!
Lisa
Well i am going to Richlin's tomorrow again...i was there last week..i will report back what the latest situation is..
I just received another email from Richlin, such a shame that they are closing. He says he can't ship but if I come in there are great deals to be had. I don't know if I can justify an entire trip for some plumies......don't know what hubby would say. But if I did, I would hope to come home with maybe 30 to 50 cuttings!
How wonderful, Lisa! You should definitely go and get some deals if you can. That would be such a fun trip. Are you really in Zone 10a? How cold does it get at night for you in the wintertime? I would think that you are in Zone 11, the warmest zone of them all, an ideal place to grow plumies! You probably get a lot of rain though and have to make sure that you have well-draining soil, I would guess. Your seedlings look great!
Clare,
My weather is pretty much on par with Fort Lauderdale. Right now we are hitting some warm weather, highs in the days of mid to high 80's and night time temps of high 70's. In a few weeks our temps probably won't dip below 80 day or night. My plumies do spectacularly here in the summer, I started seeds last May that are already over a foot tall. I can't wait to see what they are, they were all mystery seeds. I have started a few named varieties now, including Aztec Gold, Firecracker, Spider Pink, Lahaina just to name a few. If we don't get a storm here this fall things should go quite well. We get a fair bit of rain in the summer but it never lasts long, but to be sure I really cut my soil with perlite and peat moss. It is very quick draining. I have to admit I have never lost a cutting yet........everything roots fine for me just popped into a pot. I have some cuttings I brought from Maui this year and they are all rooted, leafing and a few are putting out inflos. My first try at Dwarf Singapore is putting out a beautiful inflo, I can't wait to see what it looks like! I bought one called Japanese Lantern, I hope that one will bloom this summer so I can see what it is like too. I also have quite the collection of adeniums, started all of my little ones from seed!
Lisa
It sounds like you have a perfectly ideal climate. I don't know how cold Fort Lauderdale gets, but if you don't drop below 40 in the wintertime, then you are in Zone 11. The warm nights really helps everything. Rot is usually the result of cold/wet so that explains why nothing rots on you. Wonderful! I started about 60 seeds this past summer also. Seeds are fun! The Dwarf Singapores are lovely. Please post a picture when yours blooms. I have Japanese Lantern too. That one has blooms which hang down once the tree gets to be mature enough: http://www.plumeria101.com/master_gallery/japanese_lantern.html I have 30 or so adeniums started from seed too. They are fun too!
Clare,
I went out and looked at my Candy Stripe, there is actually a bit of yellow on the fresh blooms. I will take a close pic tomorrow and upload it here. My adeniums are a hoot......it is fun to see some grow so fast and others like Bosom Jade that are still so teeny! Here is a pic of my adenium babies and in the center is my tray of plumeria seeds.
They are so cute! I lost about a dozen seedlings last spring due to belly rot. It was the weirdest thing. The roots were white, thick, and healthy, and the tops were healthy, but the bellies rotted in the middle. I was able to save some by cutting off the tops and rooting them. I watered them a lot last winter because they were in the greenhouse and because the soil would dry out fast, but I think it got too cold at night for them to have so much water, and I should have kept them drier. This winter, they were in the greenhouse again, but I watered them less and tried to keep the nighttime temp above 50 at all times. A couple of times it dipped into the 40's and once into the 30's when the power went out, but I think I won't see that same rot this year. At least I hope not.
Here is what the belly rot looked like in one of my seedlings last spring:
I have a Harry Potter on the way!
Woot!
I spent 2 hrs grafting many different scions into 2 seperate caudexes.
1 is Arrogant, Purple Clothes and Super Perfume
the other is Noble concubine, Prominent and Arrogant
I hope they both take well.
This could be a real hobby to enjoy, making multi flora adeniums.
Clare,
How did you know you had rot if they looked fine?
Just adding that Florida Colors in Homestead has MANY more varieties than are listed on their site; the site isn't kept very up to date so it's always best to give them a call. This is a two man operation and they have their hands full with the nursery especially at this time of year. I was there last weekend (talk about TAKING A DAY TRIP - that is certainly worthwhile) and they have some fantastic bloomers! They are my preferred nursery.
Wow, the thought of a three coloured adenium......gorgeous! I have a bunch of Noble Concubine seedlings, a few Arrogant, Super Satisfactory and Fragrant Delight. Only two of my Fragrant Delight germinated but they are growing well!
Clare, here is a close up of the Candy Stripe, let me know what you think!
I have about 6 seedlings namd Candy Striped LOL!
Way to go Malestrom! Have you decided what you are going to do when they all get big? That is what my husband keeps asking me. He reminds me of how cute they all are now when they are tiny but what am I going to do when they are all 10 feet tall and branched out? I don't think I have room in my garage for them then during storms! LOL!!
I keep the root bases to about 4 or 5 feet and make cuttings of the rest for trade sale and gifts. ;)
Where do you get your adeniums?
I bought my named ones form Brad in Ncasselberry Fla
I bought most of my seeds on ebay from overseas. Almost all germinated and are still growing strong!
Ipkosh,
Im wondering, Are you saying all your adeniums are from seed?
Or did you buy some already as grafts?
Some of the ones you named cant be garanteed by seed, only cutting to graft.
There is an e-bayer that sellls 15 seedlings for like 10.- us they make good root stock for grafting too
Malestrom,
All of my adeniums are from seed. I will have to wait until they bloom to see exactly what they are but for now I am going with the names they came with. My friend has a few hundred that she started from seed and she is pretty good at identifying them. So she will have to let me know what I have when we see some flowers!
Lisa
