panama flower trip photos.. plenty of Brugs in the mountain
Talk about a colorful garden! I love that orange house in the beginning.
The populated areas look like they have so much more water than the wild areas. Do they have a rainy season which you were not in? Not lush at all. Then after looking at more pics, do they have a jungle like side and a coastal drier side?
I can't believe those beaches are so empty but if there are those half human/half lizards beings lying around I understand why. LOL
In DSC_0532, are those bougie bushes? So much color.
Is DSC_0505 an orchid?
LOL, they even have escargot begonia there.
DSC_0467 beautiful sang.
You need to post this one on the tropical forum. Do you know which aroid it is? DSC_0452 Just incredible.
Are these mini mini orchids? DSC_0401
Just too cool!! DSC_0399. Are htose orchid poles behind the flowers?
OH MY MY MY. what are these??? DSC_0384
Gordon, what are the orange carrot looking things hanging out of the box in this photo? DSC_0353
I want to live here DSC_0344
Great rainbow shots and bird shots.
Shoot, I got to page 54 and realize I must get ready for work. I will look at the rest later. Thanks for showing us such beautiful pictures. Great landscape shots. I bet Claire in plumies would love to see those huge plumie trees!!
Thanks for sharing your great vacation with us.
kell did you know I was born in Panama? Left way before having any true appreciation of flora/fauna. Gordon just took me on a trip back there. Isn't it awsome? I have only gone tru page 10
Now we know why you are such a gaud girl Vossner! You were born into it. If you went back now you would be all a ga ga the whole trip!!! Can you imagine?? There are some gaud houses and gardens in those pictures that were calling out to me. LOL
I forgot to ask Gordon if he got to bring anything back or is that a huge no no?
Loved all your pictures. Are you going to label all of them? How big was that moth - guess that's what it is - #500? Absolutely love #420 - very wierd looking. And I'm dying of curiosity - what did the bird have hold of in 246? You sure got some beautiful shots of flowers and vegetation.
Sharon
you can probably bring seeds but no plants/animals/food without long quarantines and paperwork. Agriculture Dept doesn't want to be fighting foreign kooties that could ravage domestic crops, and I think that is reasonable. This is one of those topics can end up in tiresome diatribe for and against, so I won't get into that.
I will say this, if my Mom who still lives there were interested in gardening, I would have indulged in a little contraband, but alas it isn't meant to be. I guess I'm gonna have to go down there myself and sneak a couple things inside my sneakers, or something, lol. Y'all don't tell on me, OK?

Do you ever get back to see her, Voss?? I will never ever tell if you promise to always remember we are blood gaud sisters who share and share alike. LOL
Mommy comes to visit me. Are you kidding? I dare not deprive her of her jaunts to TJ Maxx and Eckerds. Oh, that's right, there are no more Eckerds, but I haven't told her yet because it would positively break her heart, lol.
Do not ask me why she loves Eckerds so much. I remember some years back when she was visiting, that she made me stop at three Eckerds that we drove by. There was no convincing her that they carried the same inventory. no way, no how, lol.
edited to add: if there is a shopping gene, I most definitely got it from her.

How neat! They are great photos! I love the McCaw! The flowers are amazing, and that yellow brug is pretty. Such great landscapes.

Gordon, I have travelled back thru your pics, my comments
0018 The catholic church, Iglesia del Carmen, where I went as a child and got my first communion. I lived very close to this church, in fact, we walked to church.
0023 Hotel continental, back in the 60's, considered a posh hotel, wonder if it is still the same. Seems like it still is. This was very close to where I lived.
0155 check out the bougainvillea arbor(s)
0347 cool display of hens and chicks
0467 brug sanguinea?
0604 I do remember those beaches...let me guess--Pacific Ocean?
0471 freesias
0472 begonia escargot, look at that big boy!
0452 ck out the anthurium!
thanks again for the trip. I noticed a lot of pics with hills and fog. Were you in Chiriqui area or somewhere close to Costa Rican border at least for part of your trip? Don't see any Panama Canal pics, hope you got to see some of that, Gordon.
I have 2-3 friends seriously looking into retiring there. Since C. Rica is now "crowded", people are looking further down, ie Panama. Paridise for sure.
what did you think of the food?
Gracias, amigo Gordon
Well... about the trip... it was into PAnama City.. the church was from the hotel window... as was the first plumerias... I was at Hotel EL Panama... right near the Continental also... I loved their plantings .. hanging out from all floors..
then ont o the high inland El VAlly.. about 2000 Meters... then down to the coast where it looked arid... but was once lust tropicl forests.. the big trees were cut and the water ran offfaster .. which made it dryer .. which kept the big trees out and started killing the smaller ones ... and the water ran off faster and it got dryer ... and it rained less... and got dryer ... and they love to burn things there ... making way for ineffecent cattle... so now it's quite arid... I was th ere at the start of the rainey season... which they have more inland.. than on the Pacafic coast there.. every beach was empty... got no folks with the leasure time... such great gardens... then inland again.. up to the brugs... no brugs on the coast.. and no plumerias inland... although it constantly 55-80 year round.. up to cero punta.. about 300 m high ..and wet during the dry season...
Kell.. yes 532 are bouganvillas.. interspaced with the tall plumerias... interesting to see the plumerias intersperced as a colored hedge look... they use it as a living fence nad nail the barbed wire to it ..
505 is a preuvian daffodil... 10 for $10.40 from www.terraceiafarms.com growing from what looks like amaryllis leaves..
452.. no idea which aroid it is... but that area.. and the orange building in 453..454..and 458 is a rental lodge ... in the middle of this ..one of the 10 biggest orchid nurseries/ collections in the world.. is available for sleepovers... bed and breakfast out on the glass dinning room... If I had known that... that's surey where I'd have spent the night while in the area... 401 orchhis was our guides favorite... 388 is the worlds smallest orchid...
384 is a table of roots in their mesh bags with cork bark.. ready to ship out.. and behind them are the chainlink fences that are everywhere .. with a wall of orchids... their mesh bags having a paperclip back and looped over the fence...
353.. es kell they are carrots... it's a vegetable store... htey grow knockout onions and lots of root veggies... guess they do verticle gardening better than most crops..yes... 344 is so cute ... a little a frame... bet you could have the entire thing for a years wages.. and then be free and clear..I didn't check the prices of the inland mt places much...got my heart set on a bit of oceanfront... but hten maybe both... a place for my brugs..and one for my plumerias..
Stownes... yes.. I love 420 also... not the new eupheasm here though... a pitcher plant... just like mine..but I had more browning than they do...
what did the bird have ahold of.. that's one of the little monkeys..they were always fighting with each other ... the monkey or one of the little dogs... they were quite the bunch there ... a lodge with them all over the place ... you might sit down to breakfast and have a macaw join you ... or the monkey... no board of health here ... just companionship... and the left over crackers.. after the cevechie is gone... well polly want a cracker ... comes from them loving them and the salt so... but after the first offering... you'd best have another .. especially for the monkey.. he's quite persistant..
Oh.. I did find some plumeria seeds ... from a wild white... if anyone wishes to have some.. drop me an address at GordonHawk@gmail.com ... I declared my honey... I allways buy it when I travel... you get it without the royal jelly having been removed.. this year I got the best one... from a man at a stand... next door to this big nursery .. with a million things blooming... Thanks all it was fun to go and nice to show..

Thanks for sharing these pictures, They are beautiful.

LOL Gordon! That brug is bigger than my house.
I just really looked at that brug. wow, that's a big boy
Gosh, I wish I had that "problem" with my brugs LOL.
voss, wonder if they Messengered that thing? LOL
well for the folks that scoff at the paramagnetic forces present in volconic soils..
I've taken to useing Volconite.. a S-N-G product... product from volcanos in the soil.. and drench the babies in S-N-G and messenger.. on alternate weeks.. things seem just fine... pictures at 11... Gordon
tee hee
My volcanite should arrive any day now. Can't wait to see how it affects the growth and flowering on my brugs.
Well... Sorry.. I'd though you'd have known the short hand S-N-G for Spray-N-Grow.. it's not a food or mineral... but allows for a mindset change in the plant.. Gee... what can I do right now to grow big and flower..I've used it for some 30 years or better ... used to foliar spray it .. to encourage budsetting.. and it does seem to help... one flush after another.. here is their site
http://www.spray-n-growgardening.com/?nd=sngproducts
I use it with their wetting agent and bills perfect ..spray on... I have noticed they are thirster after the spraying... guess things are just speeded up...
Their volcanite is there in soil addatives page ... I've not done any blind studies with it .. but after reading of Paramagnetic activity.. I'm sold on the energy behind it.. and volcanic rock has as much as anything going... paramagnetism is an energy field around the earth.. and is concentrated towards volconic rock among other things... like decomposed granite... perhaps you've hear of that being used...
toyr minerals are another matter .. like tracefeeding ... no harm there...
well I put them all outside yesterday.. and they haven't been torn up yet. aalthough I supply plenty of light for them inside... I keep the wind down to 1-2 MPH ... outside today they had said 40 MPH... but it must have passed by me here...thankfully.. the developing standards need new larger pots to keep them upright .. well...
My HG might have won the unbotherd by 6 months inside under the light award... I was shocked when I looked and saw it was her .. looking just like when she was brought inside.. now if she goes ahead and sets/deliivers a pile of blooms... I'd say I've had my labels awitched.. Gordon
Thanks Gordan. I have bought SNG form my local hydroponics store along with that perfect fertilizer!
I was just googling Volcanite and I found this interesting info:
Volcanite
Volcanite: A blend contains four different volcanic, paramagnetic crushed rocks including zeolite. The zeolite is no longer paramagnetic but it has a very high cation exchange capacity, and since we are low in iron I also added glauconite – a sedimentary mineral rich sandstone commonly called greensand. A blend of several rock materials from the Garden-Ville Company in San Antonio including basalt, lava sand, zeolite, granite, and Texas greensand. This blend works better than any of the ingredients used alone. It’s very economic because only small applications are needed to increase production. Overuse of this material can actually reduce production. Recommended rates are 1000-2000 pounds per acre, or 50 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
http://www.dirtdoctor.com/view_question.php?id=776%20-%2020k
I have been using Texas greensand already on my gardens.
I also found a cheaper source of Volcanite for you Gordon, unless the shipping kills you.
40 pounds of the exact same Volcanite direct from the maker for $6.95, as opposed to 7 pounds for $14 at the Spray and Grow site.
LOL, I forgot the site.

Well.. thanks kell.. yes it will be a savings... I end up payin shipping anyway.. and if it was already here... I'd be an hour or better getting there and back...gas tolls perhaps and parking.. on top of the time... it always makes thinking of shipping easier.. .. and it just appears here... such a breeze... Thanks..Gordon
Wow! Thank you for pointing me to your Flickr album. What marvelous and big Brugmansia trees they have there. I was not al all difficult to imagine myself sitting on these thick branches with hammer and nails and the immigration permitment in my back pocket trying to make a wood shed of planks.
Thanks again
Tonny
Unbelievable, Gordon! Thanks for sharing......I really enjoyed it.
I wish I had the guts to go retire someplace else that I could grow all those things and have a low cost of living. When my DH was alive we used to talk about doing it, but I could never do it now on my own -- no guts!
Wish I could find a man that would be up for things like that and I'd be out of here! LOL! Hmmm ........ anyone out there in the 56-63 range? (Maybe I'm too age restrictive)
Wow! I am glad someone bumped up this thread. Those are really great photos and I enjoyed looking at them all. Thank for sharing :) I hadn't seen them yet.
This was such a cool treat to come home to today. I hardly go on the brug forum and I was sure happy I lurked here today. Your trip looked amazing. I dont think I have every seen a rainbow that intence, how exciting.
in pic 558 what kind of lizard is that its so cool
I cant believe you even saw a parrot, too cool. The brugs are massive. Incredible.
thankyou so much for sharing your vacation
