Oh my Lilypon - - that's GORGEOUS! How BIG are those flowers?!
They look HUGE. Very pretty! I'm going to show your picture to MY Epies so they'll get the idea! =)

Lovely! (and, I'm jealous too.) What are you feeding yours?

My red one just bloomed, one bloom. I guess I should be thankful since it has been at my sister's since November and she has a brown thumb. At least she didn't kill it, LOL.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks everyone! :)

Betsy the flowers are 8 inches across. Ü

darius in 2004 Happenstance suggested using fish emulsion and exposing it to cooler temps over the winter. In the fall and spring I put it out in the porch (crossing fingers and toes that it doesn't freeze instead ;) and it goes in front of a cool window for the winter.

Thanks, that's what I generally use but doubt my sister fed mine over the winter.

LP,

the bloom is beautiful....did you have much growth through the winter with it by the window and when did you start up with the fish emulsion? in feb or March or earlier?

Sandy

Hi Sandy
I follow this direct quote from Candy:

Quoting:
I feed them diluted fish emulsion about every two weeks from March or so 'til late Oct/Nov.

It has had quite a bit of new growth the past two winters.

Abbotsford, BC(Zone 8a)

Thanks, i just got some fish emulsion and will be giving it a go this year.....

Jumping for joy for you Lilypon! So glad you are getting good results, and what a great glorious color to start off with! Congrats!!

I owe you an awful lot Candy! You've given me so much (valuable tips and encouragement)!!!

Clare your suggestions (re: Plumerias) have kept mine alive and sooner (or later;) I will have blooms (not just buds that blast;). and thank you for your encouragement re: epis!!!

Thank you sooooooooo very much Betsy, Ursula, Darius, Sandy........Dave's members make it such a joy to grow and discover plants (and esp. blooms) I'd never see otherwise!!! Ü

BTW does anyone know the name of this one?

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Could it be this one?

That fire engine red color is just stunning! I agree with you, LP, that Candy has really helped us with care of these plants. I don't know what we would do without her. I just bumped up some of those threads and would like to see them become sticky if possible. It can't be easy growing tropical plants in areas which freeze and have long winters so I really admire you for doing it so well.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Unfortunately that isn't it Darius.........I really wish it was. I'd be very pleased knowing its' name. The petals on mine all are cupped. It doesn't have the outer petals laying flat with the inner ones cupped. On mine they all lay half way between the flat ones and the more cupped petals that your pic is showing.

Smiling here Clare.......it can be difficult (extreme indoor winter dryness is the largest obstacle to overcome). I really wish I was talented enough to bring all my humidity loving plants through the winter. Dave's has pushed me beyond my indoor growing conditions but oh when there is success! :)

(Zone 6a)

Lilypon,

What's brand name that you feed it with fish emulsion?

Fish Emulsion? Ah man, that stuff STINKS! But if it'll help my epies bloom, I'll make the sacrifice! =0)

A tip on fish emulsion: (especially for those of you who need to use it indoors for at least part of the year or have cats indoors or out!)

It is available in an odorless version. This is just one brand, there are any number available:

Thanks Candy......I'm at work and couldn't remember the name of mine. Plus the brands here may be different than those over the border.

Does anyone use Alaska Fish Fertlizer - Morebloom?....its a 0/10/10...I guess like Happenstance says, there are many brands....it didnt cause too much discomfort to my nose and my cat didnt go bonkers over it either :)

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Hmmm....an "odorless" fish emulsion? Dang, wish I had known that. I have an almost new bottle of the stinky stuff. Used it once and I couldn't stand to get near my epies.....and my cat wanted to make love to them!
What I have is also "Alaska Fish Fertlizer" but says "All Purpose Deodorized Fish Emulsion". (and if it's been DE-ODORIZED, they need to change their brand of deodorant! PEEE-UUUU!!) It's 5-1-1, tho....not 0/10/10. Will it still get my epies to bloom?
Thankfully, the weather here in Central Illinois is mild enough now that all my Epies are out on the porch. So next watering, it's with the stinky stuff.

Betsy, i think the Alaska Fish fertilizer has 2 varieties of fertilizer from what i can tell....i also put my few epis and hoyas outside, but in one of those greenhouses so they dont get too cold and shocked....yep, haul out the stinky stuff!! cant hurt!

I'm relatively new to Epie's but love to grow orchids. Just wanted to show you some pics of my Epiphyllum oxypetalum that has just bloomed. It had four blooms all the same night! I really enjoyed trying to get some good pictures. I want to collect some colored Epies soonl. bob
