Crown Imperial Fritillaria

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I planted some Crown Imperial Fritillaria and one of them just as it starts to get ready to bloom..... a big rain storm hit here in NJ over the weekend... and the head of the flower snapped off... should I have staked it?... any suggestions

I am sooooo depressed it broke.... I was getting my normal spring excitement... and this is the first year I have ever had these... they look so beautiful

Well I guess staking them helped..... the one all the way to the left WAS the problem

You are lucky that yours came up and bloomed. None of mine came up this year. I read where these bulbs can rest for a year or so after they are planted or after blooming. I guess it pays to plant lots of them. Your photo is beautiful!

I heard if you feed them right they will come back every year.... I might just plant a few this year so at least the every other year thing taken care of....

I put these in last fall.... the good thing is it's very good dirt back there... we have tons of trees and for years the leaves would just build up and break down in that spot... the dirt back there is beautiful... might have helped

I will let you know next year..

After they bloom, and the foliage is gone, don't water them. They like cool weather. well drained rich soil, and light shade. They don't need dividing.

thank you for the advice
