Amaryllis is the garden?

Andrews, NC(Zone 6a)

Hvow deep would I plant Amaryllis is the garden? I'm in Zone 6b and have seen them in people's garden that come back each year. Would like to try for myself.

gary in your area, you would have to pull the up in winter. then replant inground when it gets warm. Depth: you leave bulb neck exposed, many people leave 1/3 of bulb exposed. both have worked for me.

Thanks Voss, I spoke with my neighbor who has them in her garden she says she leaves hers in the ground and they come back each year.

I leave mine in the ground as well. They come back every year.

It has to be the hardy kind. Not all will come back.

gldandrews, the success of your planting depends on how deeply your ground freezes. The typical Hippeastrum bulb is 3 -4" deep. How deeply does your ground freeze? Where in your garden does the ground not freeze so deeply that also gets good sunlight? Do you mulch? That also dramatically reduces the depth of frost. I've known folks in Virginia who successfully grow Hippreastrums in their garden and it seems to have nothing to do with the hardiness of the bulb itself but rather with the soil where the bulb was planted.
