If you havent tried this stuff you need to. It is sold as a cut flower and at Krogers frequently. I had seen the "hardy alstoemeria" in Forest Farms catalog and wanted to order it . Well I saw some at the Plant Shed in Mansfield 3 years ago, bought it and planted it on the north side of my house in Midlothian (under the soffet its mostly shade). Low and behold it came back and is back this year. I have found some more in early March in Arlington at Callaways. The last freeze burned it back, but low and behold it came right back out. This stuff is great in this clay soil amended somewhat. Forget about the yellow hardy variety, we can grow this here in any color we like.
ALSTROEMERIA OR "PERUVIAN LILLY"
It does tend to be, shall we say, assertive. But you're right. It does grow well here, and it is pretty.
assertive is putting it diplomatically for invasive as all get out around here, anyway....
:) Debbie
I have some of that, but it's in a raised bed. Can't wait to see it bloom!
Alstoemeria is the Bermuda grass of the flower world.
bettydee - that is a good description. LOL
I have always seen Alstoemeria as a cut flower, never thought of it growing in a bed. hmmm so its invasive? I got a spot that nothing grows in, not even Coneflowers! I am going to try it.
Sylvia
I hope you understand that it won't stay in that spot. ;-D If that doesn't bother you, you could try ruellia, physostegia, Jewels of Opar...
CJ
Only one week....Can't wait!
Ceejay, I have expierenced Physostegia, i put in the back between the cement and the bricks! lol My Ruella is in clumps, it dont go anywhere. ...now that Jewel Of Opar was given to me at the Arlington RU, I dont remember what I did with it, but I was told it was an Annual. I dont remember what I did with it. Check it out!
Sylvia
You did remember to not let the seeds spread right? Will go everywhere!
I love the Peruvian lily and have just purchased this one which is a dwarf. I tend to like the dwarfs better than the regular sized ones and am using the dwarfs as groundcover. The taller varieties are in containers and are "contained". I never seemed to be able to find a spot that they liked in my flowerbeds and just moved them from place to place until they were happy. These receive some morning sun and some late afternoon sun. The blooms are very lang lasting.
Here is the one I just purchased, 'OxanaŽ' which is one of the Princess Series ... it was expensive.
Beautiful Htop ... I love that Oxana!
Micth I dont remember what I did with that plant. I plant most everything I had, but I dont know where that one is.:(
The Princess series and some of the other dwarf, large flowered varieties are much more well behaved than the older varieties. I had red, yellow and orange heirloom varieties in TN, they spread all over the place, but these new ones(well, not that new, some are 5 or 6 years old) don't spread like crazy.
Hazel, yours are gorgeous!
Well, now I can't wait to see mine bloom. I got it at Schumacher's for working there one day. He just told me it's pink.
Sylvia - It looks safe there! LOL!
htop - Gorgeous, indeed!
Hazel, those are stunning! Did you get them at a nursery, or a box store?
