I have 18 Confederate Rose I grew from seed from the same parent. They are in their 2nd year. I have noticed that 4 of the 18 plants have strange looking leaves.
Can anyone identify what's going on here and if their is a fix? Or is it a mutation?
The Picture .. The pix on the left is a normal plant. The pix upper right is a close up of new leaves. The pix on the bottom right shows a plant with normal shaped leaves and almost round leaves.
Thanks!

Confed. Rose Problem - Disease? Mutation? Reaction to frost?
This might not be a mutation but merely genetic selection. As you probably know, seedlings can vary dramatically from their parent plant because of different genetic combinations. and it takes two to tango. do you know which plant was the parent on the other side? or was this one self pollinated? It would probably be impossible to tell unless you did the pollination yourself. Also, young foliage can sometimes differ from more mature foliage. I don't think you will be able to tell until the plants get bigger and leaf out more and flower. they don't look frost burned to me and the new foliage looks pretty lively. If they don't grow to the proper height or shape, you might suspect disease or fungus. I would look at my cultivation conditions. Are all seedlings treated the same? in the same light location? etc. But I don't think that this really influences the leaf shape so much. Hope this gives you a place to start.

Thanks Martha, I collected the seeds from a bush down the street. I'm almost 100% sure it was self pollenation since there are no others near by. They are all treated the same and are about 1and a half feet away from each other. The strange ones are in between normal ones and not side by side.

You won't get plants that are genetically identical to the parent you collected from.

X, I don't think you have anything to worry about, they all look like they have pretty normal new growth to me. Those things are going to grow like weeds no matter what they look like when they are young. By the time they start blooming this year (September maybe?) the leaves will all look alike and the plants will be huge. You said you had 18????? I hope you have plenty of space. LOL alice
Thanks for your replies! I grew them specifically to create a privacy fence. I hope they do grow like weeds!
I started them from seeds Spring of 2005 and was astonished to have half of them produce flowers that Fall.
I understand the genetics thing, I was just worried because that kind of leaf curling is a disease in other plants.

Now that I think about it they are suseptible to white fly and, at that stage aphids; both of which could cause crinkly leaves.
I wopuld love to have some Confederte Rose! When I was a lot younger I noticed them on my way to my garndmother's house one day....I was amazed at the way the blloms on a single bush varied from dark pink, to cotton candy pink, to white! I asked her what this intriguing plant was and she told me it was a Confederate Rose. For a couple fo yuears I searched high and low for this Confederate Rose, but all I could find were hibiscuses! And from having grown up with hibiscuses, I KNEW that none of them looked anything as gorgeous as that! LOL! The hibiscuses my mother grew were all Rose of Sharon or a variety taht she called Blazing Star, which I think also goes my the name Star of Texas...it was red and the leaves looked like marijauna leaves, only with a reddish color. I had no idea that hibiscus could be so stunning!
So, now I'm all grown up and living back home in the deep south...and I need a Confederate Rose. It seems that everyone in this area has a Confederate Rose that is at least 15 feet tall, a camellia bush that is also about 15-20 feet tall, and scads of daylilies! Well, I've got the camelia (although it will be a few years before it reaches the requisite height), and I've got a good start on my daylily garden. Now I just need a Confederate Rose.
Belle, send me a SASE with 50 cents postage on it, with a note that says Confederate Rose and I'll send you some seeds. My address is in the addy file.

X, are you sure they dont have mites?
Rylaff, I'll look again, but didn't notice any.

Mites are so small, you need a magnifying glass to see. And even then they are tiny. A sign of mites are that the leaves "pucker". The mites will be on the underside of the leaf. Sometimes leaves will look shinieer then they should because of the mites. Sometimes, they will feel sticky. Sometimes the leaves will take on a bronze look. Get a good magnifying glass or jewelers loop and look closely at the underside of the leaf.
that looks to me like white fly problem.. CF are VERY prone to that... they need plenty of air flow..
Bamabelle.. I just cut off a bunch of branches from my mother's tree.. Headland isn't that far from Crestview... come on over and pick up some of the cuttings.. I'm getting them started today.
Trish, Bamabelle is my sister that I was telling you about that just moved to Alabama.
LOL Lisa... too funny... well then you can stop by and grab her these cuttings. I just plunked them down in the swamp.. These are the double white to pink.. if she would like also the dbl light pink to dark pink we can whack some off of my tree.
Oh, that would be wonderful. She would love some of both and I can root them for her. Did you get some of the pitcher plant that you wanted. If not I am sure I can seperate what I have.
Trish,
Thanks a million! Yes, I would liek both the light pink and the dark pink...YIPPEEE!
I too am looking for the pink/dark pink. I have single white and single pink to trade cutting
