Can anybody help me ID the real Johnsonii? It is hard to see in the photo but the flower on the left is a true, fire engine red. The flower on the right is a lighter, more salmon color. They were both ID'd as Johnsonii. The leaves on both plants are strap like but those on the left plant are slightly narrower.
Hippiastrum Johnsonii????
Oops, this was supposed to be on the ID forum. Sorry, a
Hi ardesia,
The photos look like H x johnsonii. I did a search and here was the description from Plant Delights who sells johnsonii.
"Each flower is a sweetly fragrant, bright red trumpet, with a dramatic white star pattern in the center."
And from Easy to grow bulbs.com "Bright red flowers with white stars at the throat, very fragrant"
Another photo is here: http://www.amaryllidaceae.org/Hippeastrum/johnsonii.htm#his
I don't have this one(now I want one) and all the descriptions are bright red and fragrant. However, seedlings from self crosses as with other plants with red flowers will likely show some colour variations from a pinky red to salmon. I think the key feature is the more narrow petals.
Very beautiful Amaryllises.
NC man, Thanks for the hint about Plant Delights. From their descriptions, the dark red is the true Johnsonii and the lighter one is either Ackermanii or one of it's offspring Voodoo. I suspect it is the Ackermanii because this one is so prolific.
