Anyone grow Pulmonaria(lungwort) here in TX??

This is a picture "borrowed" from the following ebay listing:

She said she thinks it is the variety 'spilled milk'.

I am in LOVE!!

I want to order some, but all the mail order for these are located in Northern climates. It is rated for our zone, but sceptical...

Every time I've ordered from Northern companies, the plants have croaked in our southern heat.

I am hoping someone has tried these, and had luck with them...
...anyone??

A lovely DGr send me some last fall and they didn't make it for me. Heartbreaker, just like hostas. I think though, you have a much better chance of growing and enjoying.

HI!
Are you saying that hostas don't do well for you??

They do just fine here, so maybe the pulmonaria will?

Did it die in summer?

thanks for the reply

a few varieties do well, Sum & subs, france williams, night before Christmas, golden tiara, hadspen blue.

But I went hosta crazy and participated in every hosta coop buying fancier varieties, and those didn't make it. I don't know if our extremely hot summer of 2005 made a difference (for the worse) but I have decided to concentrate on gingers instead.

if hostas do well for you, I would expect pulmonaria to do well also.

Shelia in Fort Worth posted a photo in my photo thread and was growing one of these (not sure what type but one none the less). So i would think you could too...

Vossner-
Yes, hosta do just fine here, so I guess it would be worth at least a try...peonies are not supposed to do well here, but mine are doing well. It never hurts to just try I guess...but won't go crazy buying them in every color, lol...I'll wait to see what one does, first. Thanks!

Debbie-
I posted on your other thread.

Mitch-
Hi! Thanks! That is actually very encouraging. How are your daylilies doing?

My Dls are now 300 strong and growing like crazy. Hope to see loads of blooms this summer.

You have 300 daylilies Mitch?! Woah. That's alot of flowers! Do we get to see a picture?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch, ....It wasn't me, don't grow Pulmonaria at all.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

No photos yet - you can ask Joephine it is a work in progress... most are single or double fans at the moment but given time they are all going to go gang busters and bloom like crazy. I like to have DLs and Iris with my natives... they both come from Native plants wayyyyyy back when so I think they do good together. When things really start to grow I will make sure to post losty of photos to share with you guys on here. I still am not too sure how Dls and natives are going to look together but that is one reason I do not like to get the ruffled Dls I try to stick with the more plain ones in the colors I want to give the look of a wild scape without all being wild.

Shelia not you - who in the world post this in our area... I know I saw in a a froum somewhere going to have to get looking to find out who it is now...

Mitch, I think DL and iris look good with anything, native or not.:) Although iris may need more water than most natives. I put mine next to roses because that was the only place I could put them. And since they got regular water they did really well. Too well infact, they multiplied like crazy.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I leave my Iris with out water most of the year - only giving them extra water right before and during bloom time.... so far so good!

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Do you water your DL more than the irises? I've been thinking about planting a DL /iris bed. A clump of DL followed by irises and so on. Is that a good idea?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I am trying a few of those. There will be some water issues but I am going to plant the Iris in little mounds - they will like the water IF I can let the extra water run off and to the DLs. If I can get it to work I am going to use this for all my beds in time (think how easy to find a name when you just count the others plants - and no to little mixing.... )

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch, it is an interesting idea. I'll be very curious to see how it works. Do you water your DL 1 inch a week? I didn't know they needed that much water til today. Mine were definitely not getting that much and seemed to be doing fine. I guess maybe I just had extra hardy ones.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

It only effects the blooms - the inch of water a week is only if you want more blooms. Less water means less blooms - so if you did not water all that much the Iris and Dls would love a home together. In the heat of our summer I have been told Iris want about 1/4 - 1/2 an inch of water, DLs can take from that to 2 inches a week depending on the blooms you are looking for.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, OK. That's very good to know.:)

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I water my nicer Dls a lot more then my regular ones. Just want to be sure I get all the blooms I can!
