Dividing Water Iris

Highland, MD(Zone 7a)

I have two water iris one is a yellow Louisiana (or so I was told) and the other is a beautiful purple one (see picture below). I need to divide them though, they are over taking my little pond! They were in pond pots but have burst out of them. So can someone tell me how to divide them please? I have never had much luck with water plants lol but these ones, well they are something else!

TIA!

Irises are tough so I always use a shovel to cut through the rhizome. It hurts at first to be so rough but it's the easiest way I've found and the irises survive just fine.

Agreed, they are super tough, and easy to grow in the pond. They push their way through the black pond baskets ruining them, so don't over crowd your pots.

Are those mesh pots better than regular nursery pots? I have some I need to dig up that are in the ground and put them in the pond.

I have started using the solid pots for Iris. With the mesh ones, they get a few tiny roots through the holes and then they expand. They go through the holes in the bottom of the solid pots, but not as bad.
I have the aquatic soil samples ready to bring for you BTW.
