Great place - Recycled Gardens

North Plains, OR(Zone 8a)

I don't know if this is old news to those of you in the Portland area, but there is a place near us called Recycled Gardens. It is the fundraising arm of a spay/neuter group and has so many plants and trees for sale it is amazing. They have no green house, so plants are well adapted to our climate, since they all live outdoors. I've been buying there all spring, and have purchase fruit trees, berries, flowers, heather, heath, rosemary, lilac, and so much more. The plants are huge and very inexpensive and every one of them is thriving. One of the lilacs if over five feet tall and fully in bud!

They maintain a list of what is in stock at www.poppainc.org.

This is not a fancy garden, and you will probably need to ask if and where about specific plants, but the volunteer staff is very helpful.

If you are in the northwest Portland area it is worth a trip a short way into the countryside to pay a visit. Make sure you have lots of space in your vehicle - most everything they have is in gallon or larger containers.

The garden store is a mile or two north of Highway 26 at the Cornelius Pass Rd. exit and is open Thurs through Sunday.

That is so neat! I will have to check it out and even donate excess when I have it. What a great idea!

I agree, what a very worthwhile idea. Everybody wins: animals, gardeners and the community as well. Wish I lived closer!

Wow, I think that's really close to where I'm headed this afternoon. I'm going to Forest Grove and I think I saw Hillsboro was the town next to Forest Grove! If so, I'll have to find time to stop in there and check it out.

Do they have animals to adopt at the same location? I hope not - dh would not be overly joyed to see me bringing home a trunk full of plants but he'd kill me if there was an animal or two tucked in there as well!

No animals to adopt, although everyone is welcome to bring their dog with them to visit the garden.

I went yesterday looking for a tree peony, but the ones they had were gone. Of course I spent a long time wandering anyway and came home with an Azalea, a Hydrangea and a lovely lemon balsam Thyme. They had some fabulous huge plants in full flower or bud, but, since I left my husband sleeping, I could only buy things I could lift - pity.

The dog whose turn it was to go along (they go on errands with us in sequence since we can't take them all) had a wonderful time too.

Roni, do they have peruvian lilies/Alstroemerias there??? I am on the lookout for those. I want every different colors of those that I can get my hands on. They are second to my favorite flower behind of course, the dahlia. I have an orange, yellow (the invasive one unfortuanately and plan on getting rid it as soon as I can find all its tubers/roots), and the green/red one.
So if anyone has any they would like to trade for or know a good place to get them for a good price, just post here please.
That nursery sounds like a gift to all of us gardeners then. Thanks for posting it.

I don't see any on the list, but, since the inventory is always changing, you never know. They had lots of Dalias when I was there Thursday.

Since it is a couple of hours away from you a phone call might be a good idea. The number is 503 626 4070. I don't know if they can check inventory that way, since I don't know if it rings at the garden store or someone's home, but it is worth a try.

If you are in the mood to spend some time wandering and looking you can certainly get healthy plants at extremely reasonable prices so it may well be work a day trip for you.

Well, it was really close to the college we went to visit and we stopped by. I managed to keep my purchase down to 7 one gallons.

The women who worked there are so friendly and helpful. I had quite a chat with one of them. My son was laughing at us as we were chatting away like we'd known each other for years and we could have gone on for hours! She is also a big reader and was telling me about a book convention going on in Portland and then there was talk about plants and colleges and who knows what! I loved the place.

They did have Alstroemeria on their list but it was misspelled. And I believe it was sold out by the time I got there, they only had one. She said she likes to be told of errors on the website. I forgot to tell her that the directions are slightly wrong, so if you go there, you might mention it. The directions are for the driveway after Recycled Gardens, so they have you going past RG and turning left onto a street that doesn't have access.

We were driving down the street and I was admiring these big yellow sunflowers painted on a barn while we looked for the next street to turn onto (according to directions) when I saw their sign and realized that barn was them! (Very cute building.)

Several weeks ago I went past that barn when I was going to Joy Creek. I put it on my list of places to visit this spring. After reading the above post, souds like I should go soon. It is fairly close to my home.

Hi, all!

My DH and I made the trip to portland, largely to visit this nursery and the lilac garden both of which I didn't know about till they were posted here.

We had a great time, the lilacs were beautiful and fragrant! We spent the night in Hillsboro at the Marriot Suites and went to Recycled gardens the next day. They have a huge selection of excellent plants. The staff was friendly on a lazy sunday morning and we were the first through the gates.

The web site can be a bit deceiving as the prices are $4 per gallon, so a 3 gallon pot would be $12. It indicates prices go down as the sizes goes up.

They not only had perennials but also beautiful tomato plants as well. I'll definitely be going back! Thank you soldiersong for posting these!
